Accept or Decline an Invitation Naturally
Accepting enthusiastically and declining kindly require different signals. Pair claro or me encantaría with useful alternatives such as no puedo, quizá otro día, and a brief reason.
Learning objective
Respond to invitations with enthusiasm, a courteous refusal, or an alternative plan.
An acceptance confirms that you want to join, while a refusal says that the proposed plan does not work. Spanish responses sound more natural when they answer the invitation clearly first and then add enthusiasm, a brief reason, or an alternative rather than leaving the other person uncertain.
For an enthusiastic yes, use Claro, Me encantaría, Qué buena idea, or Perfecto, allí estaré. At this level, learn me encantaría as the complete warm phrase I’d love to without analysing its verb ending yet. Repeat a key detail when confirmation matters: Sí, nos vemos el viernes a las seis.
For a courteous no, begin with Gracias por invitarme or Lo siento, no puedo. A short, truthful explanation is enough: Tengo que trabajar esa tarde. Spanish-speaking communities are diverse, and expectations about how much explanation to give depend on the relationship and situation, not on a single cultural rule.
An alternative keeps the connection moving. No puedo el viernes, pero ¿te va bien el sábado? declines one time without rejecting the person. Quizá otro día is friendly but vague; when you genuinely want to reschedule, propose a concrete day or ask when the other person is free.
Keep the level of formality consistent. Gracias por invitarme works broadly, while ¿te va bien...? addresses tú and ¿le va bien...? addresses usted. Do not switch from a respectful invitation to an informal response accidentally. Names and neutral phrases can also help when you are unsure which form a new contact prefers.
Examples
¡Claro! Me encantaría ir al picnic.
Of course! I’d love to come to the picnic.
Ir al picnic is rendered contextually as come to the picnic.
Perfecto, nos vemos allí a las siete.
Perfect, I’ll see you there at seven.
The response confirms both place and time.
Gracias por invitarme, pero no puedo porque trabajo esa noche.
Thanks for inviting me, but I can’t because I’m working that night.
The brief reason makes the refusal clear without overexplaining.
El martes no me va bien. ¿Qué tal el miércoles?
Tuesday doesn’t work for me. How about Wednesday?
The second sentence offers a practical alternative.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Sí, quizá definitivamente voy a ir, no sé.
- Try
- Sí, voy a ir. Nos vemos el sábado.
Quizá, definitivamente, and no sé send conflicting signals, so the host cannot tell whether this is an acceptance. If the answer is yes, confirm it plainly. If you are uncertain, say Todavía no sé si puedo instead; that honest response is neither an acceptance nor a refusal.
Practice
Try it yourself
Reply to this invitation in two ways: ¿Quieres cenar el viernes a las ocho? First accept and confirm the time. Then decline because you work, but propose Saturday at the same time.
