Compare Options and Explain Your Choice
Choices sound more convincing when the relevant qualities are compared directly. Evaluate price, convenience, comfort, or interest, then use por eso to explain the final preference.
Learning objective
Compare two options across useful criteria and justify a preference.
A reasoned choice starts by naming the options and the criteria that matter. For a journey, you might compare precio, duración, comodidad, and horario. This keeps the evidence easy to follow.
Mientras que places two contrasting facts side by side, pero introduces a disadvantage or correction, and además adds information pointing in the same direction. Por eso should introduce a conclusion supported by those facts. It does not automatically make a weak or unrelated reason convincing.
Another person may weigh the same evidence differently because their needs are not the same as yours. Phrases such as me conviene, prefiero, and en mi caso help you choose decisively without presenting taste, budget, or access needs as universal standards.
Include a trade-off before the final choice. Aunque el tren es más caro, llega una hora antes acknowledges a cost while explaining the benefit. Aunque here introduces a real fact, so it can stay with familiar present-tense forms. You do not need more advanced grammar to make a balanced decision.
Examples
Tour A is cheaper, while Tour B takes less time.
Each option leads on a different criterion.
The window seat is quieter, but it costs more.
The disadvantage is stated before the choice.
For me, this timetable is more practical because I finish early.
The reason and the personal frame limit the judgement.
The red route has better views, so I prefer it.
Por eso connects evidence directly to preference.
Common mistake
- Instead of
The evidence needs to come before por eso, and the conclusion follows it. Para mí shows that comfort is the speaker's criterion, while lo avoids repeating el tren in the second clause.
Practice
Try it yourself
Complete a two-option decision matrix for a coach and a train using the criteria price, travel time, comfort, and departure time. Write four comparisons, acknowledge one trade-off with pero or aunque, and explain your final choice with por eso.
