Describe Physical Appearance Respectfully
Physical descriptions should identify without judging or reducing a person to appearance. Choose neutral features, distinguish ser from tener, and include details only when they are relevant.
Learning objective
Describe visible features with neutral vocabulary and grammatically appropriate structures.
A respectful appearance description serves a relevant purpose, such as finding someone in a crowd, without ranking their body or attractiveness. Start with neutral, observable details and include only what the listener genuinely needs to identify the person.
Use ser with general visible characteristics: Es alto or alta and Es de estatura media. Use tener with features someone has: Tiene el pelo corto and Tiene los ojos marrones. The English verb have does not decide the Spanish structure by itself.
Use llevar for clothing, glasses, or another current identifying detail: Lleva una chaqueta amarilla. Clothing is often more useful and less personal than a body judgement. Avoid guessing ethnicity, disability, gender, or another identity from appearance.
Forms such as alto and alta follow the grammatical reference and the language used for that person. If you do not know an appropriate gendered adjective, choose an invariant or factual alternative, repeat the person's own wording, or focus on clothing and location.
Examples
Tiene el pelo corto y lleva gafas.
They have short hair and are wearing glasses.
Singular they avoids inventing a gender absent from the Spanish sentence.
Es de estatura media y lleva una mochila roja.
They're of average height and carrying a red backpack.
The backpack is a practical identifying feature.
La mujer que busco tiene el pelo rizado.
The woman I'm looking for has curly hair.
The example names the person and one neutral feature.
El señor lleva una camisa azul y está junto a la puerta.
The man is wearing a blue shirt and is beside the door.
Clothing plus location narrows the identification.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Ana tiene alta y lleva ojos verdes.
- Try
- Ana es alta y tiene los ojos verdes.
Height uses ser in this description, while eye colour uses tener. Alta is feminine because the named person Ana is represented with that form in this example; it is not a rule for describing every person.
Practice
Try it yourself
Help a friend find Alex at a busy station. Write three neutral Spanish details: average height, short hair, and a green coat, then add that Alex is beside the information desk. Do not add attractiveness or identity guesses.
