Talk About Interests with Gusta and Gustan

Interests require a choice between gusta for one thing or an activity and gustan for plural things. Add emphasis or contrast with a mí and a ti.

Learning objective

Choose gusta or gustan and clarify whose preferences are being discussed.

Gustar organises a preference differently from English like. In Me gusta el libro, the book is the thing that pleases me. Me identifies the person experiencing the preference, while gusta agrees with one thing. This perspective prevents an English subject-first pattern from controlling the Spanish sentence.

Use gusta with one singular thing or with an activity expressed by an infinitive: Me gusta la película and Me gusta bailar. Use gustan with plural things: Me gustan las películas. The choice does not depend on how many people like something; Nos gusta bailar still uses gusta because bailar is one activity.

A mí and a ti can add emphasis or contrast, but me and te normally remain: A mí me gusta cocinar, pero a ti te gusta comer fuera. For another person, use le, and clarify when needed: A Rosa le gustan los museos. Le alone may refer to usted, él, or ella.

Develop a conversation by giving a reason and returning the question: Me gusta caminar porque puedo hablar con amigos. ¿Y a ti? ¿Te gustan las actividades al aire libre? This linked Spanish moves beyond naming hobbies and distinguishes one activity from plural activities in genuine interaction.

Examples

  1. Me gusta leer antes de dormir.

    I like reading before bed.

The activity leer takes singular gusta.

  2. A Diego le gustan los conciertos, pero no le gusta bailar.

Diego likes concerts, but he doesn’t like dancing.

Plural conciertos selects gustan; the activity bailar selects gusta.

  3. ¿Te gusta esta canción o te gustan las canciones más tranquilas?

Do you like this song, or do you like quieter songs?

The question contrasts one song with a plural category.

  4. Nos gusta cocinar juntos porque aprendemos recetas nuevas.

We like cooking together because we learn new recipes.

Nos identifies the group of experiencers; cocinar keeps gusta singular.

Common mistake

Instead of
Yo gusto las películas y Ana gusta bailar.
Try
Me gustan las películas y a Ana le gusta bailar.

The English subject-first pattern encourages yo plus a verb meaning like, but gustar makes the liked thing control singular or plural agreement. Películas requires gustan, while the activity bailar requires gusta. Me and le identify who experiences each preference.

Practice

Try it yourself

Build two contrasted preferences from these notes: yo / cocinar y mercados; Luis / correr y deportes de equipo (negative). Include a mí or a Luis where it clarifies the experiencer.
