Replace Plural Objects with Los and Las
Plural objects require los or las, preserving both gender and number. Shorten answers about people and things while keeping the reference unmistakable from context.
Learning objective
Use los and las to replace familiar plural direct objects accurately.
A plural direct object pronoun replaces more than one known person or thing directly affected by an action. Los represents grammatically masculine plural nouns, and las represents grammatically feminine plural nouns. The choice preserves both number and the grammatical gender of the Spanish noun phrase.
The replacement pattern is the same for each plural example. Replace los documentos with los and las fotos with las: Reviso los documentos becomes Los reviso, while Envío las fotos becomes Las envío. The ending -s matters because a singular pronoun would incorrectly suggest that only one object is involved.
Place los or las before a single conjugated verb. Ya los compramos means We already bought them, and No las necesitamos means We do not need them. Subject and object remain separate: in Marta los prepara, Marta performs the action and los receives it.
Context must identify the plural reference. ¿Dónde están las llaves? Las tengo yo is clear. If two possible feminine plural nouns have just been mentioned, repeat the intended noun or add a detail rather than forcing the listener to guess what las means.
When the direct objects are people, Spanish normally uses personal a, the a placed before many specific people: Invito a mis primas. The a is not carried into Las invito. Some regions use le for certain personal direct references, but lo, la, los, and las provide a clear broad starting point.
Examples
¿Necesitas los recibos? —Sí, los necesito para el informe.
Do you need the receipts? —Yes, I need them for the report.
Los preserves the masculine plural reference.
Lavo las fresas y después las corto.
I wash the strawberries and then cut them up.
Las links the ordered kitchen actions naturally.
No veo a mis vecinas, pero las llamo esta tarde.
I can’t see my neighbours, but I’ll call them this afternoon.
Las refers to the feminine plural group already named.
Compramos el pan y los huevos. Yo lo llevo en una bolsa y Max los lleva en otra.
We buy the bread and eggs; I’ll carry the bread, and Max will carry the eggs.
The first sentence establishes both objects before lo and los replace them.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Las cartas están listas y la envío hoy.
- Try
- Las cartas están listas y las envío hoy.
The known object las cartas is plural, so its replacement must also be plural: las. The singular la would refer to one feminine object. Matching both gender and number before placing the pronoun ahead of envío keeps the reference accurate.
Practice
Try it yourself
A travel partner asks: ¿Tienes los mapas y las entradas? Reply in Spanish: say yes, the maps are in your backpack, and you are carrying the tickets in your jacket pocket. Use los and las without repeating either noun.
