Ask for Clothing Sizes and Colours
Clothing searches combine demonstratives, size language, colours, and availability. Describe the item you want, ask for another option, and check whether you can try it on.
Learning objective
Request clothing in a particular size or colour and ask to try it on.
Identify the item before requesting a variation: Busco esta camisa or Me gusta ese abrigo. Then ask ¿Tiene esta camisa en una talla más grande? A demonstrative is a pointing word such as esta or ese that identifies the item being discussed. This keeps the noun visible while you ask for the option you need.
Talla is widespread for clothing size, while talle is common in parts of Latin America; country and shop usage varies. Number systems also differ, so show the label or describe the fit instead of assuming that the same number represents the same size everywhere.
Colour adjectives normally follow the noun and agree when their form changes: una camisa blanca and unos pantalones blancos. Many colour words ending in e keep one singular form, as in una falda verde and un jersey verde, then add s in the plural.
To ask about trying an item on while keeping the item stated, say ¿Puedo probarme esta camisa? Probarse means to try clothing on. Also ask ¿Dónde están los probadores? when you need the fitting rooms before deciding.
Examples
¿Tiene esta chaqueta en una talla más pequeña?
Do you have this jacket in a smaller size?
The item, demonstrative, and desired change are explicit.
Busco unos pantalones negros.
I'm looking for some black trousers.
Negros agrees with the masculine plural noun pantalones.
¿Hay este vestido en azul?
Does this dress come in blue?
En azul asks whether that colour option is available.
¿Puedo probarme este abrigo?
Can I try this coat on?
The full noun stays present, keeping the request easy to analyse.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Quiero un camisa blanco en talla grande.
- Try
- Quiero una camisa blanca en una talla grande.
Camisa is feminine, so both una and blanca agree with it. Talla also takes una in this phrase. The correction preserves the intended item, colour, and requested size without treating a possible form as universally numbered.
Practice
Try it yourself
Ask a shop assistant for this green shirt in a larger size, ask whether it also comes in blue, and request permission to try the green shirt on. Keep the noun visible in the final request.
