Present-Tense E to IE Stem-Changing Verbs
Pensar, querer, and empezar change inside the stem while keeping familiar endings. Spot the boot-shaped pattern and preserve the unchanged nosotros form.
Learning objective
Apply the E to IE stem change to common present-tense verbs and recognise the unaffected forms.
The stem is the main part left after removing the infinitive ending. In pensar, the stem is pens. Some frequent verbs change e to ie in that stem for most present-tense subjects: pienso, piensas, piensa, pensamos, pensáis, and piensan. The regular AR endings remain visible around the change.
The change does not occur in nosotros or vosotros present forms, so pensamos and pensáis retain e. A traditional boot-shaped diagram groups the changing forms around the unchanged centre, but the practical question is simpler: am I using nosotros or vosotros? If yes, keep the original vowel in this tense.
Querer and empezar follow the same placement: quiero but queremos, empieza but empezamos. Do not assume every verb containing e belongs to this group; necesitar stays necesito, and beber stays bebo. Treat the pattern as part of a verb’s vocabulary entry, then apply it consistently once confirmed.
Place the forms in a purposeful exchange: Quiero preparar la cena. ¿Empiezas ahora? Sí, pero pensamos comer a las ocho. The Spanish becomes connected as one person expresses a wish, another asks about starting, and the group states a plan, while each subject controls the stem choice.
Examples
Pienso en el problema y después hablo con Ana.
I think about the problem and then speak with Ana.
Pienso carries the e-to-ie change for yo.
¿Quieres venir o prefieres descansar?
Do you want to come, or would you prefer to rest?
Quieres changes e to ie; prefieres shows the same pattern in another confirmed verb.
Empezamos temprano porque queremos terminar a tiempo.
We start early because we want to finish on time.
Empezamos keeps e for nosotros, while queremos also keeps its original stem vowel.
Ellos piensan viajar, pero nosotros pensamos quedarnos.
They plan to travel, but we plan to stay.
The contrast exposes piensan beside unchanged pensamos.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Nosotros piensamos que la clase empeza tarde.
- Try
- Nosotros pensamos que la clase empieza tarde.
Nosotros keeps the original e in pensamos, while the third-person singular subject la clase requires empieza. Adding ie everywhere is as inaccurate as never adding it. The subject identifies whether this confirmed stem-changing verb changes in the present.
