Give More Detailed Weather and Seasonal Descriptions

Seasonal descriptions go beyond hace calor by adding intensity, frequency, and change. Compare typical conditions with today's weather and connect both to everyday activities.

Learning objective

Describe seasonal patterns and current weather with varied expressions and modifiers.

Detailed weather separates a usual seasonal pattern from conditions now. En invierno suele llover describes what commonly happens, while Hoy está lloviendo reports an event in progress. Suele plus an infinitive expresses a tendency, not a guarantee for every day.

Combine established weather frames accurately: hace mucho calor, está bastante nublado, hay viento fuerte, and llueve poco. Each degree word belongs with the appropriate expression. Spanish does not use one all-purpose equivalent of English it is for every weather description.

Add frequency and change to make seasons informative: Normalmente las mañanas son frescas, pero por la tarde sube la temperatura. A connected contrast reveals the daily pattern. De repente and ahora mark a current change, while normalmente and a menudo mark recurring conditions. This shows how the weather develops during the day.

Seasons occur at different calendar times across hemispheres, and local climates vary within countries. Name the place or months when timing matters rather than treating one seasonal calendar as universal. Connect weather to an activity with a practical reason, not a cultural stereotype.

Examples

  1. En primavera suele llover por la tarde.

It often rains in the afternoons during spring.

The translation presents a recurring seasonal tendency.

  2. Hoy está más nublado que ayer.

It's cloudier today than it was yesterday.

The comparison describes a current difference.

  3. Por la mañana hace fresco, pero luego sube la temperatura.

It's cool in the morning, but the temperature rises later.

The sentence tracks change across the day.

  4. Ahora hay viento fuerte, así que no salimos en barco.

There's a strong wind now, so we aren't taking the boat out.

The current condition leads to a practical decision.

Common mistake

Instead of
En verano es mucho calor y hoy hace nublado.
Try
En verano hace mucho calor y hoy está nublado.

Heat uses hacer in hace mucho calor. Cloud cover uses estar with the adjective nublado. The corrected sentence also separates a typical summer pattern from today's current sky condition.

Practice

Try it yourself

Compare a typical season with the current weather in a named place. Say winter in Brisbane is usually dry and mild, but today it is raining heavily and windy, then explain one changed outdoor plan.
