Simple Answers to ¿Cómo Estás?

Answers to ¿Cómo estás? do not need to be elaborate. Use bien, muy bien, regular, or mal, and add gracias to keep the exchange moving.

Learning objective

Answer a wellbeing question with bien, muy bien, regular, or mal.

Bien means well or fine and is the simplest positive answer to ¿Cómo estás? Muy bien means very well and adds enthusiasm. You can say Estoy bien, meaning I am well, but the shorter Bien is completely natural in many everyday greeting exchanges.

Regular describes a middling or so-so state. It does not mean regular in every English sense here. Mal means badly or not well. These short answers let you be honest without giving personal detail, and your tone can gently show whether you want the conversation to continue.

Add gracias to acknowledge the person's interest: Bien, gracias means Fine, thank you. Then ask ¿Y tú? with an informal partner or ¿Y usted? with a respectfully addressed person. The y means and, so these compact questions return attention without repeating the full original sentence.

Other natural answers exist, and communities differ in their preferred small talk. Más o menos means more or less and often communicates so-so. Start with bien, muy bien, regular, and mal, then notice the phrases real speakers around you use rather than treating the four options as a fixed emotional scale.

Examples

  1. Bien, gracias.

    Fine, thank you.

A concise positive response suitable in many settings.

  2. Muy bien. ¿Y tú?

    Very well. And you?

    The return question is informal.

  3. Regular, pero bien.

    So-so, but okay.

Regular communicates a mixed or middling state.

  4. Mal, hoy estoy enfermo.

Not well; today I am ill.

A speaker who uses a feminine form says enferma instead of enfermo.

Common mistake

Instead of
Soy bien.
Try
Estoy bien. / Bien.

Current wellbeing uses estoy rather than soy because the phrase reports how you feel now, not who you are. In a greeting exchange, you can avoid the choice entirely with the natural one-word answer Bien. Both correct options are useful, while soy bien does not express the intended meaning.

Practice

Try it yourself

Answer ¿Cómo estás? in three ways: positively, so-so, and negatively. Add thanks to the positive answer and return the question informally. Then change only the return question for a person addressed as usted.
