¿Dónde Está? Asking Where Something Is
¿Dónde está...? helps locate a person, place, or object. Insert the thing you need, then listen for a brief answer with familiar direction words.
Learning objective
Ask for the location of a person, place, or object with dónde está.
Use one location frame with a replaceable final slot: ¿Dónde está el hotel? means Where is the hotel? Dónde is the accented question word where. Está is a present form of estar, the verb used here for location. El hotel is the person, place, or object you need to locate.
A noun phrase is a noun together with words that belong with it, such as the article la in la estación. Swap the noun phrase while keeping the frame: ¿Dónde está la estación? asks Where is the station? ¿Dónde está María? asks Where is María? Personal names normally appear without an article in these examples.
A short answer may use aquí, here, or allí, there: El hotel está allí means The hotel is there. A speaker may also point or add a direction you do not yet know. Listen first for your requested noun and one location signal rather than expecting to understand every word.
Use está for one located person, place, or object. Está can also match respectful singular usted in other contexts, but this lesson focuses on location. The question is useful in shops, homes, streets, and stations; choose a respectful tone and add por favor when the situation benefits from extra courtesy.

Common mistake
- Instead of
- ¿Dónde es la estación?
- Try
- ¿Dónde está la estación?
For the physical location of this station, Spanish uses estar, producing está. Es is a form of ser and serves other jobs such as identity. Keep dónde está as the dependable beginner location frame rather than translating the English word is without considering its job.
Practice
Try it yourself
Draw a three-place mini-map containing el hotel, la estación, and María. Ask where each is, then answer one with aquí and two with allí. Point to the matching places as you speak.
