Adding Morning, Afternoon or Evening to the Time
A clock time becomes clearer when you add the part of day. Distinguish de la mañana, de la tarde, and de la noche in everyday schedules.
Learning objective
Clarify a time with de la mañana, de la tarde, or de la noche.
An exact hour can still leave a practical question: morning or evening? Add de la mañana, de la tarde, or de la noche after the clock time. Son las ocho de la mañana means It is eight in the morning. These phrases locate the hour within a part of the day.
Use de la mañana for morning times, de la tarde for afternoon and often early evening, and de la noche for night. The boundaries are not universal clock rules. Region, season, daylight, meal schedules, and the activity being discussed can influence when speakers choose tarde or noche.
The one-o'clock distinction remains active: Es la una de la tarde means It is one in the afternoon. Other hours keep son las, as in Son las nueve de la noche. De is a linking preposition, and la belongs to the feminine nouns mañana, tarde, and noche.
Some communities also use de la madrugada for very late-night or early-morning hours. Madrugada names the period around the hours before dawn, but its boundaries also vary. Recognise that useful regional option while practising the three core phrases in realistic schedules rather than imposing one fixed timetable.
Choose the phrase from the real situation first, and then attach it to the complete clock answer. This meaning-first order helps you remember that the extra words clarify an hour for another person; they are not labels fixed to identical times everywhere.

Common mistake
- Instead of
- Son las ocho de el mañana.
- Try
- Son las ocho de la mañana.
Mañana, meaning morning here, is a feminine noun and takes la in this time phrase. De plus la stays as two words. Do not use the masculine article el or contract it to del. Store de la mañana as one dependable chunk.
Practice
Try it yourself
Place four appointments on a day wheel: breakfast at 8:00, lunch at 1:00, a film at 9:00, and an airport trip at 4:00 before dawn. Say each time with the most useful part-of-day phrase, then note which boundary could vary locally.
