Spanish Numbers from Eleven to Thirty

Once to quince have distinctive forms, while later numbers reveal helpful patterns. Move gradually from eleven to thirty and pay special attention to spelling and stress.

Learning objective

Recognise and say the distinctive number forms from once to treinta.

Build eleven to thirty as three neighbourhoods rather than one long list. The first has distinctive forms: once, doce, trece, catorce, quince. They mean eleven through fifteen. Say them forward, then call them from random written numbers so each word gains its own identity.

Sixteen through nineteen share the written beginning dieci: dieciséis, diecisiete, dieciocho, diecinueve. These standard spellings join the parts into one word. Dieciséis carries an accent. Veinte means twenty and begins the next neighbourhood with a different sound and spelling.

From twenty-one to twenty-nine, standard spelling again uses one word: veintiuno, veintidós, veintitrés, veinticuatro, veinticinco, veintiséis, veintisiete, veintiocho, veintinueve. Keep the written accents on veintidós, veintitrés, and veintiséis. Treinta is thirty; numbers after thirty use another pattern taught later.

Use a staircase strategy: anchor 15, 20, 25, and 30, then fill the gaps. Stress is the syllable that receives extra spoken emphasis. The written accents preserve expected stress in the highlighted forms. Regional accents affect sound details, but these standard number words remain widely understood.

Examples

  1. once, doce, trece, catorce, quince

    eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen

This first group is worth learning as distinct forms.

  2. dieciséis libros

    sixteen books

Dieciséis is written as one accented word.

  3. veintitrés días

    twenty-three days

    Veintitrés keeps its written accent.

  4. treinta personas

    thirty people

Treinta provides the upper anchor for this lesson.

Common mistake

Instead of
veinte y dos in standard written Spanish for 22
Try
veintidós

The standard modern spelling for twenty-two joins the parts into one word and adds an accent: veintidós. A learner may be understood after separating the pieces, but the spaced form does not match the standard spelling expected in edited text. Learn the sound and spelling together.

Practice

Try it yourself

Climb a number staircase. Fill the missing Spanish forms in 14, 15, __, 17; 20, 21, __, 23; 24, __, 26; 28, 29, __. Then highlight every answer that needs a written accent.
