Talking About the Languages You Speak
Talking about languages reveals an easy point of connection. Say what you speak, explain that you are learning Spanish, and ask the same question back.
Learning objective
Say which languages you speak and explain that you are learning Spanish.
Hablo means I speak. Add a language to state what you use: Hablo inglés means I speak English, and Hablo español means I speak Spanish. Language names are normally written with a lowercase first letter in Spanish unless they begin a sentence.
To ask one person informally, use ¿Hablas español?, meaning Do you speak Spanish? A respectful version is ¿Habla español? or ¿Habla usted español? The final s in hablas marks the informal pattern here, while habla works with usted in the respectful question.
If your ability is limited, Hablo un poco de español means I speak a little Spanish. You can also say Estoy aprendiendo español, meaning I am learning Spanish. This honest phrase often encourages a helpful response and explains why you may need slower speech or repetition.
No hablo mucho español means I do not speak much Spanish. Place no directly before hablo. Avoid apologising for learning; combine the limit with a practical request instead: Estoy aprendiendo español. Más despacio, por favor. That keeps the conversation open and tells the listener how to help.
Examples
Hablo inglés.
I speak English.
Hablo already carries the meaning I in this sentence.
¿Hablas español?
Do you speak Spanish?
The final s belongs to the informal question.
Hablo un poco de español.
I speak a little Spanish.
Un poco de gives a modest description of ability.
Estoy aprendiendo español.
I am learning Spanish.
This phrase presents learning as an active process.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Hablo un poco español.
- Try
- Hablo un poco de español.
The standard quantity pattern is un poco de followed by the language. The incorrect form copies English order and omits the required de. Learn un poco de español as one chunk, then replace español with another language when you need to describe a different limited ability.
Practice
Try it yourself
Write that you speak English, speak a little Spanish, and are learning Spanish. Then ask a friend if they speak Spanish and change the question for a person addressed as usted.
