Hear Discourse Markers in Fast Speech

Markers such as bueno, pues, a ver, and entonces organize thought even when they carry little dictionary meaning. Notice their position and intonation to predict what follows.

Learning objective

Use audible discourse markers to segment fast speech and anticipate speaker moves.

A discourse marker is a short expression that organises speech and signals how a speaker is managing an idea or the conversation. In fast Spanish, bueno, pues, a ver, and entonces create useful mental boundaries even when their dictionary meanings contribute little.

La posición orienta la interpretación. Bueno al inicio puede abrir una respuesta; pues después de una pregunta puede dar tiempo para pensar; a ver suele enfocar la atención; entonces puede presentar una consecuencia, una conclusión o el siguiente paso.

Delivery changes the likely move. A drawn-out pues with a pause may signal hesitation, while a brisk pues can introduce a reason. A falling entonces can close an argument; a rising entonces may check what follows. Treat these as evidence, not fixed translations.

Position and intonation work together with context. Bueno can reluctantly accept a proposal or warmly begin an explanation. Entonces can mean a logical result or simply move a story forward. Verify the reading against the speaker's next words and the situation.

Examples

  1. Bueno, podemos probar tu idea.

All right, we can try your idea.

Initial bueno opens a response and sounds accepting in this context.

  2. Pues... no sé si llegaremos.

    Well... I don't know whether we'll arrive.

The pause and hesitation that follows make pues a thinking-time signal.

  3. A ver, revisemos primero los datos.

Let's see, let's review the data first.

A ver directs attention to the next task.

  4. Entonces, ¿reservamos para el viernes?

So, shall we book for Friday?

Rising intonation turns entonces into a check on the proposed next step.

Common mistake

Instead of
Pues always means because, and entonces always means then.
Try
Identify the marker's position, delivery, and following move before choosing an English rendering.

Markers organise interaction rather than carrying one stable translation. The same form can hesitate, connect a reason, close a point, or launch a next step according to context.

Practice

Try it yourself

A speaker says: «Bueno, acepto el cambio. Pues... necesito revisar el presupuesto. A ver, estos son los costes nuevos. Entonces, ¿lo decidimos mañana?». Map each marker to a distinct move and cite position or delivery evidence.
