Describe a Word You Do Not Know
A missing noun does not have to end your sentence. Describe what the object does, looks like, belongs to, or is used for until the listener recognises it.
Learning objective
Use circumlocution to communicate an unknown word through function, appearance, or category.
Circumlocution means describing an idea when the exact word is missing or you do not know it. Start with a broad category such as Es una cosa, un lugar, una persona, or una herramienta, then add the feature that most quickly separates it from other possibilities.
Function is often the strongest clue: Sirve para abrir botellas or Se usa para cargar el móvil. You can add appearance with es de metal, tiene una pantalla, or es pequeño. Avoid listing many weak details when one clear purpose would let the listener identify the object sooner.
The familiar words donde and que can connect a description: Es el lugar donde compras medicinas and Es una persona que arregla tuberías. Here donde links a place to what happens there, while que links a person or thing to an action. These short frames let familiar vocabulary carry an unfamiliar noun.
Invite help after giving enough evidence: ¿Cómo se llama? or ¿Qué palabra usáis aquí? The second question acknowledges that names may vary by region. Communication succeeds when the listener understands the idea, even if you still need to learn and confirm the local word afterward.

Es una cosa pequeña de metal; se usa para abrir una puerta.
It's a small metal thing used to open a door.

Common mistake
- Instead of
- Es una cosa... bueno... una cosa que hace cosas.
- Try
- Es una herramienta pequeña que se usa para apretar tornillos.
Repeating a broad category gives the listener no distinguishing evidence. The correction adds size and a precise function, making the unknown word destornillador much easier to supply.
Practice
Try it yourself
Play an object-description game without saying the target words paraguas, cargador, and panadería. For each one, give a category, a function or typical action, and one useful feature, then ask the listener what it is called.
