Paraphrase a Message in Simpler Spanish
Paraphrasing proves understanding without repeating every original word. Preserve who did what, when, and why while replacing difficult language with structures you control.
Learning objective
Restate a short message accurately with simpler vocabulary and grammar.
A paraphrase restates a message with different, usually simpler language while preserving its essential meaning. First identify who acts, what happens, when it happens, and why or under what condition. Those anchors matter more than copying the original order or every descriptive word.
Replace difficult wording with structures you control. Debido a las obras, el acceso permanecerá cerrado hasta las tres can become Hay obras, así que no se puede entrar hasta las tres. The simpler version keeps the cause, restriction, and end time without pretending that every word has a direct substitute.
Check names, negatives, numbers, and direction carefully because a small change can reverse the practical message. No llega antes de las seis does not mean llega antes de las seis. If a detail is uncertain, ask for clarification before including it in your restatement.
A good paraphrase can be shorter, but it should not add conclusions the speaker never gave. María quizá venga is not the same as María viene. Use the paraphrase as a bridge to understanding, then invite confirmation when someone will make a decision based on it.
Examples

Original: Debes presentarte en recepción. Simple: Tienes que ir primero a recepción.

A familiar obligation frame replaces formal wording.

Original: Delivery will take place from Monday. Simple: They're going to deliver the orders from Monday.
The start day stays accurate in the simpler future frame.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Mensaje: ‘No abre hasta las nueve’. Resumen: Cierra a las nueve.
- Try
- Mensaje: ‘No abre hasta las nueve’. Resumen: Abre a las nueve, no antes.
The incorrect version changes an opening limit into a closing time. The correction preserves both the action and the meaning of no...hasta by stating the earliest opening time plainly.
