Suggest What to Do Together

Social suggestions turn shared interests into possible activities. Use podemos, podríamos, or ¿por qué no...?, compare two options, and invite the other person's preference.

Learning objective

Suggest and compare social activities while making space for another person's choice.

Podemos plus an infinitive offers an activity that the speakers can realistically do: Podemos ir al mercado. It can sound direct and energetic. Add si quieres or ask ¿Qué te parece? when you want to leave the other person clear space to respond.

Podríamos is a conditional form, a verb form that presents an action as a possibility or makes a proposal less direct. Podríamos visitar el museo means We could visit the museum. Here it opens an option; it does not claim that the plan is decided.

¿Por qué no...? introduces another collaborative suggestion: ¿Por qué no tomamos un café? Spanish normally follows it with a present-tense form such as tomamos. Compare two ideas with o, pero, and también before asking which one suits the other person. This pattern is useful when the group already has a shared activity in mind.

A useful suggestion includes practical context. Podemos caminar por el parque, pero va a llover; podríamos ir al cine explains the trade-off. End with ¿Qué prefieres? or ¿Cuál te apetece más? The latter is especially common in Spain, so expect regional alternatives. This lets both speakers weigh the options before one of them chooses.

Examples

  1. Podemos cenar cerca del teatro.

We can have dinner near the theatre.

The suggestion presents a feasible plan.

  2. Podríamos ir el domingo, si te va bien.

We could go on Sunday, if that suits you.

The conditional presents the day as an option.

  3. ¿Por qué no visitamos primero el mercado?

Why don't we visit the market first?

The question invites agreement on sequence.

  4. El museo es barato, pero el parque está más cerca. ¿Qué prefieres?

The museum is inexpensive, but the park is closer. Which would you prefer?

The choice follows two relevant comparisons.

Common mistake

Instead of
Podemos a ir al cine o podríamos a cenar fuera.
Try
Podemos ir al cine o podríamos cenar fuera.

Podemos and podríamos connect directly to an infinitive, so no a appears between the verbs. Ir and cenar remain unchanged because the first verb already carries the person and the direct or possible meaning.

Practice

Try it yourself

Suggest two Saturday activities to a friend: a cheap outdoor market and a more expensive indoor exhibition. Use podemos for one, podríamos for the other, compare the options, and ask for the friend's preference.
