Repair a Speaking Mistake Without Stopping
Self-correction can be brief enough to preserve fluency. Use mejor dicho, perdón, or quiero decir, replace the problem word or form, and continue the message.
Learning objective
Correct a spoken error quickly and resume the intended sentence with confidence.
A brief self-repair lets you replace one mistaken word or form and continue the same message. Mejor dicho introduces a more accurate version, quiero decir clarifies intended meaning, and perdón can flag a quick correction. The useful pattern is signal, replacement, then continuation.
Replace only what needs changing: Llegamos el jueves... perdón, el viernes a las seis. Repeating the entire conversation gives the mistake more weight and interrupts the listener's understanding. If the original meaning was already clear and the detail is unimportant, you may simply continue.
Grammar repairs can remain equally short: Mi hermana viven... mejor dicho, vive en Lima. The repair supplies the subject-matching form without a long explanation. Communication practice benefits from noticing and correcting a form, but constant self-monitoring can make speech harder to sustain.
Use quiero decir when the first expression points towards the wrong idea: Es barato... quiero decir, no es muy caro. Tone and context decide whether the second phrase truly clarifies the first. Self-repair supports clearer connected speech; it does not require perfect accuracy or prove that every future error will be noticed.
Examples
La cita es el martes... perdón, el miércoles.
The appointment is on Tuesday... sorry, Wednesday.
Only the incorrect day is replaced.
Mis padres vive... mejor dicho, viven cerca.
My parents lives... rather, they live nearby.
The repair corrects subject-verb agreement and continues.
Nos vemos en la estación... quiero decir, delante de la biblioteca.
We'll meet at the station... I mean, in front of the library.
Quiero decir replaces the wrong meeting place.
Necesito dos mesa... perdón, dos mesas pequeñas.
I need two table... sorry, two small tables.
The speaker repairs number on both noun and adjective.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Ayer voy... No, espera, está mal. Tengo que empezar otra vez.
- Try
- Ayer voy... mejor dicho, fui al mercado con Ana.
The corrected version replaces the present form with the familiar preterite fui and completes the message. Restarting everything is unnecessary when one short repair makes the time reference clear.
Practice
Try it yourself
Edit a voice-note transcript containing three slips: ‘Mañana fui al médico, la cita es a las ocho... no, a las nueve, y llevo mis documento.’ Insert mejor dicho, perdón, or quiero decir for each repair, then continue with one final plan.
