Confirm What You Understood in Spanish
Confirmation catches misunderstandings before they become practical problems. Restate the essential message with entonces or o sea and invite the speaker to verify your interpretation.
Learning objective
Paraphrase key information and ask another speaker to confirm its accuracy.
Confirmation restates the essential message and invites correction before anyone acts. Entonces can introduce a conclusion from what you heard: Entonces, quedamos el martes a las cinco, ¿verdad? The tag ¿verdad? asks the speaker to verify the entire practical summary.
O sea can introduce a simpler reformulation in many conversations: O sea, primero pago aquí y luego recojo el billete. Usage and tone vary, so listen to how people around you use it. In a more formal service exchange, Entonces or Si he entendido bien may feel clearer.
Preserve the important roles, action, time, and condition. If someone says Marta lleva las llaves a Luis después del trabajo, do not confirm that Luis takes them to Marta. Pronouns can shorten a restatement only when their reference remains unmistakable to both speakers.
End with a real invitation to correct you: ¿Es así?, ¿correcto?, or ¿verdad? Confirmation is not merely repeating words with rising intonation. A useful version selects the information that affects the next action, such as the date, entrance, price, or responsibility.
Examples
Entonces, la reserva es para cuatro personas a las ocho, ¿verdad?
So, the booking is for four people at eight, right?
The summary collects the details that could affect arrival.
Si he entendido bien, tengo que enviar el formulario hoy.
If I've understood correctly, I need to send the form today.
The speaker states the action and deadline for checking.
O sea, tú compras las entradas y yo reservo la mesa.
So, you're buying the tickets and I'm booking the table.
The restatement keeps the two responsibilities distinct.
La puerta norte está cerrada; entonces entro por la sur, ¿correcto?
The north gate is closed, so I go in through the south gate, correct?
The consequence is checked before the speaker moves.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Sí, entiendo.
- Try
- Entonces, recojo el pedido mañana después de las diez, ¿verdad?
Sí, entiendo gives the other person nothing concrete to verify. The corrected version exposes the speaker's interpretation of the action and time, allowing a mistaken detail to be repaired immediately.
Practice
Try it yourself
Turn a booking note into a spoken recap. The café confirms Sunday, 10:30 am, five people, under the name Ruiz, with a table outside unless it rains. Restate every action-changing detail and finish by inviting confirmation.
