Sequence a Routine with Primero, Luego and Después

Sequence markers help separate a list of actions into a story listeners can follow. Organise a routine with primero, luego, después, and al final.

Learning objective

Organise present-tense actions with sequence words that show a routine's beginning, middle, and end.

A sequence marker is a word or phrase that shows the order of events. Primero introduces a first action, luego and después move the account forward, and al final closes it. These connectors help a listener understand relationships that a simple list of present-tense sentences leaves implicit.

Primero and luego can stand at the beginning of a sentence, often followed by a written comma. Después can appear alone or introduce a point of reference with de: después del desayuno means after breakfast. English speakers sometimes copy after of; Spanish contracts de plus el to del in this phrase.

Use connectors selectively rather than placing one before every tiny movement. Primero preparo café y desayuno. Después, camino a la estación y tomo el tren. Al final del día, vuelvo a casa. Grouping related actions keeps the account natural and lets each marker signal a meaningful stage.

A richer routine can include cause and contrast as well as order: Primero reviso mi agenda porque tengo mucho trabajo. Luego respondo mensajes, pero después descanso diez minutos. Al final, preparo el día siguiente. This connected Spanish explains why one action happens and where the routine changes direction.

Examples

  1. Primero me ducho y luego preparo el desayuno.

First I shower, and then I prepare breakfast.

The two markers establish a clear morning order.

  2. Después del trabajo, compro comida para la cena.

After work, I buy food for dinner.

Después de introduces the event used as a time reference.

  3. Leo el correo; después, organizo las tareas más urgentes.

I read my email; afterwards, I organise the most urgent tasks.

Después advances from information gathering to planning.

  4. Al final de la tarde, cierro el ordenador y salgo a caminar.

At the end of the afternoon, I close the computer and go for a walk.

Al final closes a substantial stage rather than merely meaning next.

Common mistake

Instead of
Primero desayuno. Primero trabajo. Primero vuelvo. Primero ceno.
Try
Primero desayuno, luego trabajo, después vuelvo a casa y al final ceno.

Repeating primero presents every action as the beginning. The corrected version assigns distinct stages and connects the final two naturally. The issue is meaning, not punctuation alone: a useful sequence must show how events advance.

Practice

Try it yourself

Reorder and connect this evening routine with primero, luego, después de, and al final: cenar; llegar a casa; descansar diez minutos; preparar la ropa de mañana.
