Put Past Events in a Clear Story Order

Past events make sense when listeners can see their order. Combine primero, después, entonces, and por último with preterite verbs to shape a short narrative.

Learning objective

Sequence completed actions into a coherent past-tense story.

A narrative sequence arranges events so a listener can reconstruct what happened. Primero opens the action, después advances it, entonces often introduces the next development or result, and por último closes the account. Their meanings overlap, but each can contribute a different relationship.

Keep completed actions in the preterite: Primero llegué, después busqué la dirección, and por último encontré el edificio. English story order may rely heavily on and then; Spanish offers several connectors, yet repeating a connector is not inherently wrong when clarity matters more than stylistic variety.

Entonces can mean then or so depending on context. Perdí el autobús, entonces llamé a un taxi presents the call as a response. Después simply places one action later. Choose according to the relationship you intend rather than replacing every English then with one fixed Spanish word.

A coherent story also carries references forward: Primero compré las entradas. Después di las entradas a Marta. Entonces entramos al teatro y, por último, buscamos nuestros asientos. Repeating las entradas is deliberate because it keeps the relationship clear for a learner; later lessons can show shorter ways to refer back to them.

Examples

  1. Primero abrí el correo y después respondí el mensaje.

First I opened the email, and then I replied to the message.

The second action depends logically on the first.

  2. Perdimos el mapa, entonces preguntamos a una vecina.

We lost the map, so we asked a neighbour.

Entonces presents the question as a response to the problem.

  3. Luego caminamos hasta la plaza y allí encontramos a Luis.

Then we walked to the square and found Luis there.

Allí links the discovery back to the destination.

  4. Por último, volvieron al hotel y descansaron.

Finally, they returned to the hotel and rested.

Por último closes two related final actions.

Common mistake

Instead of
Por último llegué. Primero cené. Después salí de casa.
Try
Primero salí de casa, después llegué y, por último, cené.

The original connectors contradict the likely chronology. Grammar cannot rescue a sequence whose labels misrepresent events. The correction assigns departure first, arrival next, and dinner last; a different story would be possible if its context justified another order.

Practice

Try it yourself

Put these events into a logical four-step story and choose primero, después, entonces, and por último: call the restaurant; discover it is full; find another place; eat there.
