Identify the Most and Least with Superlatives
Superlatives place one member at an extreme within a group. Combine an article, noun, más or menos, and an adjective, then name the comparison group when needed.
Learning objective
Build relative superlatives that identify an extreme quality within a group.
A relative superlative identifies one member of a group as having the most or least of a quality. In Es el edificio más alto del barrio, the article—the small word el before edificio—and the noun establish the member, más alto gives the extreme quality, and del barrio names the comparison group.
The article and adjective agree with the noun: la calle más tranquila, los trayectos menos caros, and las salas más amplias. When the noun is already clear, Spanish may leave it unstated: De estas rutas, la más corta es la verde. The feminine article still points back to ruta.
Name a sensible group with de when the listener needs the boundary: el café más concurrido de la zona. Without that boundary, the claim may sound much broader than your evidence. De los tres que probé is especially useful because it limits the conclusion to personal experience.
Superlatives organise options, but they do not prove every other quality. El hostal menos caro may be farther away, and la excursión más larga may not be the most interesting. Add one contrasting detail before deciding so the structure supports careful comparison rather than automatic praise.
Examples
Es la estación más cercana del distrito.
It is the closest station in the district.
La and cercana agree with estación, and the district limits the group.
Este es el menú menos caro de los cuatro.
This is the least expensive menu of the four.
The group contains four clearly identified options.
Son las habitaciones más luminosas del hotel.
They are the brightest rooms in the hotel.
Both article and adjective are feminine plural.
De las rutas que conozco, esta es la más segura de noche.
Of the routes I know, this one is the safest at night.
Personal knowledge and time narrow the safety claim.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Es restaurante más tranquilo de la calle.
- Try
- Es el restaurante más tranquilo de la calle.
The relative superlative needs the matching article before the noun here. El marks restaurante as the member selected from the group de la calle; más tranquilo supplies the extreme quality.
Practice
Try it yourself
Act as a museum guide choosing labels for three exhibits. Write one card for the oldest object, one for the least heavy object, and one for the most colourful object. Name the three-item group each time and add one factual limitation.
