Express Equality with Tan Como

Tan...como highlights a quality shared to the same degree. Compare experiences, objects, and people, then contrast this adjective pattern with tanto when quantities appear later.

Learning objective

Use tan plus an adjective plus como to express equal qualities.

Use tan plus an adjective plus como when two subjects share a quality to the same degree: El tren es tan cómodo como el autobús. Tan does not change for gender or number, while the describing adjective still agrees with the first noun: Las rutas son tan directas como antes.

Equality depends on the quality you name, not on the two things being identical. Mi hermana es tan paciente como mi padre compares patience only. They may differ in age, interests, or experience. This narrow meaning helps you make a precise observation without exaggerating overall similarity.

Do not add de or que inside this frame. The two fixed markers work together: tan introduces the degree and como introduces the comparison point. If you switch to más or menos, then que returns. Keeping the frames side by side makes the contrast easier to hear and produce.

Tan describes the degree of a quality, whereas tanto concerns an amount or quantity and normally accompanies a noun or an action. Tengo tanto tiempo como tú is therefore a different structure. At this stage, use tan...como confidently with adjectives and simply notice that tanto belongs to quantity.

Examples

  1. El museo es tan interesante como la galería.

The museum is as interesting as the gallery.

The comparison is limited to how interesting the two places are.

  2. Esta silla es tan cómoda como el sofá.

This chair is as comfortable as the sofa.

Cómoda agrees with the feminine subject silla.

  3. Los billetes digitales son tan prácticos como los de papel.

Digital tickets are as practical as paper ones.

Prácticos matches the plural masculine subject.

  4. Hoy el centro está tan tranquilo como mi barrio.

The city centre is as quiet as my neighbourhood today.

Hoy limits the equality claim to the current situation.

Common mistake

Instead of
La clase es tan útil que la práctica.
Try
La clase es tan útil como la práctica.

A comparison of equal degree pairs tan with como. Que belongs to the unequal frames más...que and menos...que, so mixing tan with que breaks the structure intended here.

Practice

Try it yourself

Complete three comparison cards with tan...como, then add a realistic limit: la biblioteca / tranquila / el parque; el té / popular / el café; estas botas / cómodas / mis zapatillas.
