Making Articles and Nouns Agree

Article and noun work as a small agreement team. Check masculine or feminine and singular or plural so both words carry the same grammatical information.

Learning objective

Match an article with a noun's gender and number.

Agreement means that connected words display compatible grammar information. A Spanish article must agree with its noun in gender and number. Gender is the masculine or feminine noun category; number is singular for one or plural for more than one. El libro therefore becomes los libros, not las libro.

The four definite articles in this first system are el, la, los, and las, all commonly translated as the. El matches masculine singular, la feminine singular, los masculine plural, and las feminine plural. The noun's established category chooses the gender, while the intended quantity chooses the number.

Indefinite articles match too. Un libro means a book, una mesa means a table, unos libros means some books, and unas mesas means some tables. Unos and unas can introduce an unspecified plural group. You do not need them in every plural sentence, but their forms illustrate the same agreement pattern.

Check a phrase in two passes: first ask whether the noun is singular or plural, then recall its article and grammatical gender. This method handles familiar exceptions cleanly: el problema becomes los problemas, and la mano becomes las manos. Their unusual final letters do not change their established categories.

Examples

  1. el libro / los libros

    the book / the books

Masculine gender remains while number changes.

  2. la mesa / las mesas

    the table / the tables

Both words switch from singular to plural.

  3. un problema / unos problemas

    a problem / some problems

    Problema remains grammatically masculine.

  4. una mano / unas manos

    a hand / some hands

    Mano remains grammatically feminine.

Common mistake

Instead of
las libros
Try
los libros

Libros is the plural of the masculine noun libro, so it needs the masculine plural article los. Las correctly marks feminine plural and therefore conflicts with this noun. Recover by identifying the stored singular pair el libro, then changing both parts to plural.

Practice

Try it yourself

Correct these mismatched pairs: la libro, el mesas, las problemas, and los manos. Explain the gender and number of each corrected expression.
