Essential Spanish Nouns for People and Family
Family and people words become more useful when learned with articles. Build a compact vocabulary for relatives and everyday relationships without memorising an overwhelming list.
Learning objective
Identify and use a small core of nouns for relatives and other people.
A small family vocabulary becomes easier when every noun includes its article. La madre means the mother, el padre the father, la hermana the sister, and el hermano the brother. The article shows grammatical gender and also gives you a natural unit to repeat and remember.
For other people, el amigo means the male friend and la amiga the female friend. El niño means the boy and la niña the girl. Use a form that fits the person you mean, and follow the words people use for themselves rather than assigning a label from appearance.
Some family terms are shared by grammatical context. La persona, the person, is always a feminine noun grammatically even when it refers to a man, a woman, or someone of another identity. Gender of the noun persona controls its article; it does not state the referred person's identity.
Plural forms are useful for groups: los hermanos can mean brothers or siblings in a mixed group, while las hermanas means sisters. Families and relationships differ, so vocabulary describes rather than defines them. Begin with the people important to your own life, and add names after a simple frame such as Es mi hermana.
Examples
la madre y el padre
the mother and the father
Each family noun keeps its own article.
la hermana / el hermano
the sister / the brother
The paired endings and articles distinguish these forms.
una persona
a person
Persona is grammatically feminine regardless of the person's identity.
Es mi amiga Ana.
She is my friend Ana.
Amiga is the feminine form; use amigo for a male friend when relevant.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- el persona
- Try
- la persona
Persona is a grammatically feminine noun, so its article is la even when the person being discussed is not a woman. This is a clear example of why noun category and human identity must remain separate. Learn la persona as a fixed vocabulary pair.
Practice
Try it yourself
Match articles to madre, padre, hermana, hermano, amiga, amigo, and persona. Then write two short identifications with Es, meaning he is, she is, or it is in this context.
