Combine Indirect and Direct Object Pronouns
When both objects become pronouns, Spanish places the indirect form before the direct one. Identify recipient and thing first, then build combinations such as me lo and te la.
Learning objective
Replace two objects with correctly ordered indirect and direct object pronouns.
When Spanish replaces both objects, the indirect object pronoun identifies the recipient or receiver and comes before the direct object pronoun, which replaces the thing, person, or item transferred: Ana me lo envió means Ana sent it to me.
Empieza por la oración completa: Ana envió el contrato a Pablo. El contrato es objeto directo y puede convertirse en lo; a Pablo es destinatario y se representa con le. Después aplica la combinación especial de tercera persona: se lo.
The direct object pronoun agrees with the item in gender and number, while the indirect pronoun tracks the recipient. A feminine singular item therefore uses la, several masculine items use los, and neither choice changes who receives them.
El orden se mantiene delante de un verbo conjugado: Me lo explicaron. Con infinitivo o gerundio existen posiciones alternativas que se estudiarán aparte, pero la secuencia interna sigue siendo indirecto antes de directo: explicármelo, explicándomelo.
A full noun phrase can remain beside an indirect pronoun when the recipient needs clarification or emphasis. If the direct object is also replaced, an added phrase such as a Julia still identifies who receives the item while the pronouns keep their order.
No adivines los pronombres desde la traducción inglesa. Identifica primero la acción, pregunta qué o a quién recibe directamente esa acción y quién recibe el objeto o beneficio. Solo entonces selecciona formas, concordancia y orden.
Examples
Mi compañera me prestó el cargador y mañana se lo devolveré.
My colleague lent me the charger, and I'll return it to her tomorrow.
Me marks the first recipient; se retrieves the colleague and lo retrieves the charger in the return.
¿Tienes la llave? Te la dejo en recepción.
Do you have the key? I'll leave it for you at reception.
Te identifies the recipient and la agrees with feminine singular llave.
Nos explicaron las condiciones y luego nos las enviaron por correo.
They explained the conditions to us and then emailed them to us.
Nos stays recipient while las retrieves the plural feminine conditions.
A Pablo le di los planos; también le entregué una copia a Marta.
I gave Pablo the plans; I also gave Marta a copy.
Full noun phrases make both recipients clear before any double-pronoun compression.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Lo me enviaron ayer y la te devolveré mañana.
- Try
- Me lo enviaron ayer y te la devolveré mañana.
The indirect recipient pronouns me and te must precede direct lo and la. La in the second clause needs a previously established feminine item, such as la copia; order does not remove agreement requirements.
Practice
Try it yourself
Continue a three-person office exchange by replacing both objects in each reply. Ana sends me the contract, I return the key to you, and the library lends the manuals to us. State each full object pair in the prompt, then answer with pronouns.
