Build Meaning with Hacer and Poner Expressions

Frequent combinations such as hacer caso, hacer falta, poner en marcha, and poner en duda carry meanings larger than their individual words. Learn their grammar alongside realistic situations.

Learning objective

Use selected hacer and poner expressions as grammatical, context-rich lexical units.

A fixed expression is a conventional combination whose full meaning is not built by translating every word separately. Hacer caso, hacer falta, poner en marcha, and poner en duda each bring their own grammar and typical communicative settings.

Hacer caso a alguien significa atender su consejo: Le hice caso a la médica. Hacer falta expresa necesidad o ausencia y muestra concordancia: Hace falta una firma; hacen falta dos firmas. La persona aconseja; la cosa necesaria controla el número.

Poner en marcha means to start or activate a plan, machine, or process. Poner en duda means to question a claim or reliability without necessarily denying it. The prepositions are part of each lexical unit and should be recorded with it.

No generalices una traducción de hacer o poner. Hacer una pregunta es la opción panhispánica habitual; poner una pregunta no tiene ese alcance. Poner atención aparece en muchas regiones, mientras prestar atención también está muy extendido.

Fixed does not mean that tense and person are frozen. Speakers conjugate poner normally when they launch a project or will activate a system. Objects and pronouns also remain available: Lo pusieron en duda can retrieve an established result or claim.

Aprende las unidades mediante escenarios y participantes. Pregunta quién hace caso a quién, qué hace falta, qué se activa y qué afirmación se cuestiona. Esa red gramatical es más útil que una lista de equivalencias inglesas.

Examples

  1. Hice caso a la técnica y apagué el equipo.

I followed the technician's advice and switched off the equipment.

Hacer caso a identifies whose guidance was followed.

  2. Hace falta una firma, pero hacen falta dos testigos.

One signature is needed, but two witnesses are needed.

The singular and plural complements produce the expected agreement contrast.

  3. Pusimos en marcha el proyecto después de la prueba.

We launched the project after the trial.

The expression presents activation rather than physically placing something in motion.

  4. Los errores ponen en duda la fiabilidad del informe.

The errors call the report's reliability into question.

Evidence questions reliability without automatically proving the report false.

Common mistake

Instead of
Puse duda el informe porque hacen falta una firma.
Try
Puse en duda el informe porque hace falta una firma.

Poner en duda requires en as part of the expression. Singular una firma controls hace falta; a plural complement would require hacen falta.

Practice

Try it yourself

Write a four-step project update. Say whose advice you followed, what document is needed, which plan you activated, and which unsupported claim you questioned. Use each target expression in a causal sequence.
