Interpret the Many Meanings of Quedar
Quedar can arrange a meeting, indicate what remains, describe how something fits, or locate a place. Let participants and complements reveal the relevant meaning in context.
Learning objective
Interpret and use quedar across arrangements, remainder, fit, and location contexts.
Quedar has several common meanings, and its participants and complements reveal which one is active. It can arrange a meeting, indicate what remains, describe fit or appearance, or locate a place. One English equivalent cannot cover them all.
With a remaining quantity, the thing left controls the verb: queda una entrada, quedan tres entradas. With clothing, an indirect pronoun identifies the wearer: La chaqueta me queda bien; esos zapatos te quedan pequeños.
Context can combine meanings playfully or ambiguously: Quedamos en el café que queda frente al teatro contains arrangement first and location second. Keep complements explicit until listeners can distinguish the two frames without effort.
