Organize a Multi-Part Opinion

A developed opinion needs a position, reasons, qualification, and conclusion. Guide listeners with desde mi punto de vista, por un lado, sin embargo, and en definitiva.

Learning objective

Deliver a structured opinion that includes support, qualification, and a clear conclusion.

A developed opinion gives listeners a route through the reasoning. State the position, supply distinct reasons, acknowledge a qualification or counterpoint, and finish with a conclusion whose strength matches the evidence.

Sin embargo introduces a limitation that genuinely affects the proposal. It should not announce a sentence that simply repeats the position. A useful qualification may narrow the audience, recognise a cost, or set a condition for support.

Markers cannot substitute for evidence. Por un lado, es bueno and además, me gusta sound organised but remain vague. Name observable effects, relevant experience, or reliable data, and distinguish those grounds from personal preference.

From my point of view, the square should have more shade.

The marker frames a proposal as the speaker's position rather than established fact.

For one thing, trees would reduce the heat; they would also create places to rest.

Two distinct benefits support the same proposal without pretending to be opposites.

However, the roots would need space away from the pipes.

The practical limitation qualifies implementation rather than abandoning the central view.

Ultimately, it would be sensible to plant fewer trees but choose suitable locations.

The conclusion integrates benefits and constraints into a narrower recommendation.

Common mistake

Instead of
Por un lado, apoyo el plan. Sin embargo, también lo apoyo. En definitiva, hay otra razón nueva.
Try

The correction gives evidence, a real qualification, and a conclusion derived from both. The original misuses sin embargo for repetition and introduces new support only after claiming to conclude.

Practice

Try it yourself

Give a five-sentence opinion about extending library hours. Include a clear position, two different supporting reasons, one qualification or counterpoint, and a conclusion. Use the five specified discourse markers without adding unsupported universal claims.
