Use Passive Se with Singular and Plural Things

Passive se presents a thing as sold, needed, or offered and makes the verb agree with that grammatical subject. Compare se vende la casa with se venden casas.

Learning objective

Match the verb to singular or plural subjects in passive-se constructions.

Passive se foregrounds a thing or patient affected by an action while leaving the agent unexpressed. That noun functions as the grammatical subject, so the verb agrees with it: se vende la casa but se venden las casas.

La concordancia permite reconocer la estructura. En Se necesita una persona, necesita es singular porque una persona también lo es. En Se necesitan dos personas, necesitan concuerda con el sujeto plural, aunque el agente que las necesita permanezca sin identificar.

Passive se is common in notices, adverts, and procedural descriptions. It often sounds more natural than a full ser passive, yet both are possible in suitable contexts. Do not claim that one construction always replaces the other.

Con personas específicas introducidas por a, suele aparecer una impersonal: Se entrevistó a las candidatas. Sin a, Se buscan traductores puede ser pasiva y plural. El significado práctico puede parecer parecido, pero el análisis explica la concordancia distinta.

Word order can vary: Se alquilan habitaciones and Habitaciones se alquilan en verano both allow habitaciones to control plural agreement, although the first is more typical in a notice. Context and information focus shape placement.

Antes de conjugar, localiza la cosa ofrecida, vendida o necesaria y determina su número. Luego comprueba si existe a personal. Esta secuencia evita copiar un singular fijo después de se y también evita forzar plural en una impersonal.

Examples

  1. Se vende la casa con todos los muebles.

The house is for sale with all its furniture.

Singular casa is the patient-subject and controls vende.

  2. Se venden casas con jardín en esta zona.

Houses with gardens are sold in this area.

Plural casas controls venden even though no seller is named.

  3. Se necesita una persona con experiencia; se necesitan dos para el turno nocturno.

One experienced person is needed; two are needed for the night shift.

Agreement changes with the singular and plural patient-subjects.

  4. Se ofrecen clases presenciales y se incluye una sesión en línea.

Face-to-face classes are offered, and one online session is included.

Ofrecen agrees with clases; incluye agrees with sesión.

Common mistake

Instead of
Se vende entradas para el concierto.
Try
Se venden entradas para el concierto.

Entradas is the plural grammatical subject of this passive-se notice. The verb must agree in plural as venden, even though the people selling the tickets remain unspecified.

Practice

Try it yourself

Create a ticket-office notice with two matched singular/plural pairs. State that one ticket and several tickets are sold, then that one assistant and two assistants are needed. Explain which noun controls each verb.
