Connect Information with Que and Quien
Que can refer to people or things in many relative clauses, while quien refers to people and commonly follows a preposition or appears in nonrestrictive clauses. Avoid English-based substitutions.
Learning objective
Choose que or quien according to antecedent, preposition, and clause structure.
A relative pronoun connects a noun, called its antecedent, to information about it. Que can refer to people or things in many clauses. Quien refers only to people and is especially common after a preposition or in nonrestrictive comments.
After a preposition, quien can be natural for people: la colega con quien trabajo. Que may require an article in many prepositional relatives: la colega con la que trabajo. The exact choice also depends on preposition, formality, and regional preference.
Do not use quien for an inanimate thing. A programme requires a suitable relative construction such as con el que or con el cual. Conversely, bare quien does not normally replace restrictive subject que when identifying the person who rang.

Common mistake
- Instead of
An inanimate programme cannot be quien; con el que supplies the prepositional relation. The restrictive subject relative after persona uses que without a preposition.
