Use Prepositional Pronouns Mí, Ti, and Sí

Most prepositions take stressed pronouns such as mí and ti, while con produces conmigo and contigo. Use sí for a third-person reflexive meaning and disambiguate when needed.

Learning objective

Select stressed pronouns after prepositions, including reflexive sí and con forms.

Most prepositions take stressed pronouns: para mí, de ti, entre nosotros, and sin ella. Mí has a written accent to distinguish the pronoun from possessive mi; ti has no accent because there is no competing unstressed word of the same form.

Con crea las formas especiales conmigo y contigo, no con mí ni con ti. En tercera persona reflexiva, con y sí se fusionan en consigo: Marta llevó el documento consigo. La forma reflexiva recupera al sujeto de la oración.

After prepositions other than con, sí can refer to a singular or plural third-person subject. The key contrast is between con, which forms consigo, and other prepositions, which keep sí separate. For example, para sí means for oneself, while de sí means about oneself. Add mismo, misma, mismos, or mismas when they make the reflexive link clearer.

No todas las preposiciones siguen esta pauta de manera simple. Entre admite tú y yo cuando se coordinan—entre tú y yo—en lugar de entre ti y mí. Según y excepto también muestran pautas especiales, así que no extiendas una regla más allá de las construcciones practicadas aquí.

Stressed pronouns can create contrast: Este regalo es para ti, no para mí. The duplicate tonic phrase may coexist with a clitic where grammar requires it: Te lo dieron a ti. The clitic and prepositional phrase perform different structural and contrastive work.

Al elegir una forma, identifica preposición, persona y referencia reflexiva. Después comprueba las excepciones con con y entre. Finalmente decide si mismo aporta claridad o énfasis, sin usarlo como relleno obligatorio.

Examples

  1. Este mensaje es para mí, pero la copia es para ti.

This message is for me, but the copy is for you.

Mí carries an accent as a pronoun; ti does not.

  2. Ana vino conmigo y después habló contigo.

Ana came with me and later spoke with you.

Conmigo and contigo replace the nonstandard combinations con mí and con ti.

  3. El director guardó una copia para sí mismo.

The director kept a copy for himself.

Sí mismo points reflexively back to the masculine singular subject.

  4. Entre tú y yo podemos resolverlo sin ellos.

Between you and me, we can solve it without them.

Entre tú y yo is the established coordinated pattern; sin takes stressed ellos.

Common mistake

Instead of
Este asunto es para yo y puedes hablar con mí.
Try
Este asunto es para mí y puedes hablar conmigo.

After para, first-person singular uses the stressed pronoun mí. With con, the special combined form is conmigo, not con mí.

Practice

Try it yourself

Write a three-sentence handover involving a gift for the speaker, information about the addressee, a manager keeping a copy for herself, and a later meeting together. Use every required prepositional pronoun naturally.
