Choosing Between Pretérito and Imperfecto in a Story

A narrator chooses a viewpoint, not a mechanical duration rule. Use the imperfect for background or an unfolding scene, then the preterite to foreground bounded events.

Learning objective

Frame a past scene and move its main events forward with deliberate aspect choices.

Choosing between the preterite and imperfect is a choice of aspect: the speaker presents a past situation from a particular viewpoint. The imperfect looks inside a scene, habit, or action in progress. The preterite presents an event as bounded and moves the narrative to its next point.

A story often opens with imperfect forms for weather, age, location, repeated behaviour, and simultaneous background actions. A preterite event then enters the scene. This background-versus-foreground pattern is powerful, but it describes a narrative effect rather than a mechanical rule attached to particular verbs.

Time expressions support an interpretation but do not select the tense alone. Still, the verb form reflects how the narrator packages the event, so read the whole relationship rather than matching one keyword.

Examples

  1. Llovía cuando salimos del cine.

It was raining when we left the cinema.

The imperfect supplies the ongoing weather; the preterite marks the bounded departure.

As a child, I used to visit my grandparents every summer.

The imperfect presents a repeated past pattern without counting separate visits.

  3. Viví allí de 2019 a 2022.

    I lived there from 2019 to 2022.

The preterite packages a multi-year situation as one completed interval.

People were talking and music was playing; then the lights went out.

Layered imperfect background makes the preterite interruption prominent.

  5. Cuando entré, Pablo escribió el mensaje.

When I came in, Pablo wrote the message.

Both preterites present successive bounded events rather than an interrupted action.

Common mistake

Instead of
Use the imperfect for long actions and the preterite for short actions.
Try
Choose the imperfect for an internal, habitual, or background view and the preterite for a bounded view.

Duration cannot explain Viví allí veinte años, which is long but bounded, or La miré un segundo mientras hablaba, where a brief preterite occurs against an unfolding imperfect.

Practice

Try it yourself

Then explain which actions create the scene and which one advances it.
