Keep Time Relationships Clear in Reported Past Speech
Reporting from a past viewpoint may shift present forms to the imperfect and completed events to the past perfect. Preserve the original timing rather than converting every verb mechanically.
Learning objective
Report earlier statements while preserving their time relationships from a past viewpoint.
Reported speech retells someone's earlier words from a new speaking point. When the reporting verb is past, present states may shift to the imperfect and completed events to the past perfect, but the original time relationship must remain recognisable.
Ana dijo: «Estoy cansada» puede convertirse en Ana dijo que estaba cansada. Si dijo «He terminado el informe», una narración retrospectiva puede usar dijo que había terminado el informe para mantener la finalización anterior al acto de hablar.
The shift is not a mechanical conversion of every verb. A fact still presented as current can remain present: El guía explicó que el museo abre a las diez. Speaker intention, factual persistence, and the reporting context determine whether the new viewpoint requires a shift.
También cambian algunas referencias: hoy puede pasar a ese día, aquí a allí y mañana a al día siguiente. Estos ajustes no son adornos; conservan el centro temporal y espacial del mensaje cuando quien informa habla desde otra situación.
Examples
«No tengo la llave». → Dijo que no tenía la llave.
‘I don't have the key.’ → She said that she did not have the key.
The present state is viewed from the past reporting moment; the chosen context determines whether English uses he, she, or they.
«Ya hemos comido». → Explicaron que ya habían comido.
‘We've already eaten.’ → They explained that they had already eaten.
Past perfect preserves completion before the original statement.
«Mañana llamaré». → Prometió que llamaría al día siguiente.
‘I'll ring tomorrow.’ → He promised that he would ring the following day.
Conditional and time phrase both relocate the future plan from a past viewpoint.
La médica señaló que el tratamiento dura seis semanas.
The doctor pointed out that the treatment lasts six weeks.
Present dura remains possible because the duration is still asserted as valid; médica is naturally translated by professional role.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Ayer Luis dijo: «Llegaré mañana». Hoy lo relato así: Ayer Luis dijo que llegará mañana.
- Try
- Ayer Luis dijo: «Llegaré mañana». Hoy lo relato así: Ayer Luis dijo que llegaría hoy.
Today's retelling uses llegaría hoy because the original mañana belonged to Luis's words yesterday. Without that quoted source, it is valid for the current reporter to say Ayer Luis dijo que llegará mañana when mañana is tomorrow from the reporting moment and the arrival is still future.
