Reach Back to an Earlier Event with the Past Perfect
When a narrative already occupies the past, había plus a participle reaches further back. Establish the later reference point clearly so the earlier event remains easy to follow.
Learning objective
Order two past layers by anchoring an earlier event with the past perfect.
The past perfect uses imperfect había plus a participle, a verb form such as llegado or escrito, to place an event earlier than an established past reference point. It reaches back from that later point rather than simply meaning very long ago.
With haber, the participle remains invariant: ellas habían escrito, not habían escritas. Agreement belongs elsewhere when a participle functions adjectivally, as in las cartas estaban escritas. Keeping auxiliary and adjective structures separate prevents false agreement.
When I opened the document, someone had deleted the last page.
The deletion predates the later discovery at opening.
I did not recognise the neighbourhood because several buildings had been built.
The earlier change explains the later failure to recognise the area.
Marta ya había salido cuando la llamé.
Marta had already left when I rang her.
Had left preserves the earlier layer; rang is natural Australian English for this phone call.
Nos explicó que nunca había viajado sola.
She explained that she had never travelled alone.
The prior life experience is measured from the past explanation.
Common mistake
- Instead of
The past perfect needs había or habían plus an invariant participle. Terminadas would agree as an adjective in las pruebas estaban terminadas, but it does not agree with compañeras or pruebas when haber forms the compound tense.

Reconstruct an incident report from four cards: technician closed the window at 8:30 but did not latch it; a gust reopened it at 8:35; the alarm activated at 8:40; the guard arrived at 8:45 and discovered the open window. Narrate from the guard's arrival and mark the earlier developments with past perfect.
