Express Wishes with Quiero Que
A wish directed toward another subject creates two linked clauses. Contrast quiero salir with quiero que salgas, keeping the infinitive when the subject remains the same.
Learning objective
Express personal wishes with either an infinitive or a changed-subject subjunctive clause.
Mood is the grammatical way a speaker frames an idea as asserted, desired, doubted, or evaluated. The subjunctive is a mood used in quiero que to present another subject's action as the content of a wish, not as an independent assertion.
Si el sujeto entendido es el mismo, querer lleva infinitivo: Quiero descansar. Con un sujeto diferente, se construye una cláusula —un grupo con verbo y sujeto— introducida por que: Quiero que descanses. La terminación identifica al nuevo participante.
An object pronoun is a short form such as me or te that identifies an affected participant. Quiero que me llames asks the listener to call me, while quiero llamarte means I want to call you. The pronoun does not erase the subject contrast.
El deseo negativo mantiene el subjuntivo: No quiero que conduzcas con sueño. La negación modifica lo deseado, no elimina la relación entre dos sujetos. Quisiera puede suavizar una petición, pero pertenece a otro contraste de cortesía y no sustituye esta regla estructural.
Examples
Quiero terminar el informe antes de comer.
I want to finish the report before lunch.
One subject wants and completes the action, so the infinitive is sufficient.
Quiero que termines el informe antes de comer.
I want you to finish the report before lunch.
A changed subject requires a finite subjunctive clause.
Mis padres quieren que los visite este invierno.
My parents want me to visit them this winter.
Los refers to the parents; natural English changes clause order rather than translating que literally.
No queremos que nadie pierda la oportunidad.
We don't want anyone to miss the opportunity.
The negative wish still frames the other subject's action with subjunctive pierda.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Quiero que salir temprano.
- Try
- Quiero salir temprano. / Quiero que salgamos temprano.
Que cannot be followed by a bare infinitive in this wish pattern. Use quiero salir when the speaker will leave, or supply a finite changed-subject clause such as que salgamos when the group should leave.
Practice
Try it yourself
Negotiate chores in a shared flat. Write six connected wishes: two about your own actions with infinitives, three about another resident or the group with que plus subjunctive, and one negative wish containing an object pronoun. Identify every performer.
