Anchor Past Events with Ayer and Finished Time Phrases

Ayer, anoche, and el fin de semana pasado place events inside finished time frames. Match these markers with preterite actions and position them flexibly for emphasis.

Learning objective

Anchor completed past actions with accurate Spanish time markers.

A finished time marker places an event inside a period the speaker treats as complete. Ayer means yesterday, anoche means last night, and el fin de semana pasado means last weekend. These phrases strongly support the preterite when the accompanying action is also viewed as completed.

Markers can open or close a sentence: Ayer compré pan and Compré pan ayer are both natural. The opening position establishes the frame early; the closing position can highlight when the event occurred. A comma after a short opening word is optional in many simple sentences, so avoid making punctuation a false grammar rule.

Other useful frames include esta mañana when the morning is understood as finished, hace dos días for two days ago, and en 2025 for an event bounded by that year. Whether hoy or esta semana is finished depends on the speaker’s viewpoint, so the marker helps interpretation without selecting a tense mechanically in every context.

A short account can vary placement for emphasis: Anoche salí con amigos. Cenamos en un restaurante nuevo y volvimos tarde. Dormí poco, así que esta mañana tomé dos cafés. Each marker anchors a cluster, while the consequence connects the night to the following morning.

Examples

  1. Ayer terminé el proyecto y celebré con mi equipo.

Yesterday I finished the project and celebrated with my team.

    Ayer frames two linked completions.

  2. No vimos la película anoche porque llegamos tarde.

We didn’t see the film last night because we arrived late.

Anoche appears later while still anchoring both actions.

  3. Hace dos días recibí una carta inesperada.

Two days ago I received an unexpected letter.

Hace plus a duration counts back from the present.

  4. El verano pasado viajaron por Chile durante un mes.

Last summer they travelled around Chile for a month.

The season and duration form a completed frame.

Common mistake

Instead of
En ayer fuimos al mercado y pasado noche cocinamos.
Try
Ayer fuimos al mercado y anoche cocinamos.

Ayer normally appears without en, and anoche is the established expression for last night. English last night cannot be rebuilt mechanically as pasado plus a noun. The corrected markers naturally anchor two completed actions.

Practice

Try it yourself

Reorder and connect the event with natural markers: receive a message / two days ago; answer / yesterday morning; meet the sender / last night. Use recibir, responder, and conocer in the preterite.
