Use the Preterite for Completed Past Actions

Completed actions give the preterite its clearest job. Identify events with a finished boundary and contrast them with present habits before learning the new endings.

Learning objective

Recognise when a finished past event calls for the Spanish preterite.

The preterite is a Spanish past tense that presents an action or event as completed within a bounded time. Ayer trabajé hasta las cinco places the work inside yesterday and views it as finished. This first distinction concerns the event’s shape, not a claim that every past sentence must use one tense.

Compare a present habit with a completed occurrence: Normalmente camino al trabajo means I normally walk to work, while Ayer caminé al trabajo reports one finished journey. English may use a similar-looking past form without requiring you to label the boundary, so the Spanish time frame deserves conscious attention.

Clear markers include ayer, last night expressed as anoche, and el lunes pasado, last Monday. A result can also close an event: Terminé el informe means I finished the report. A specific duration such as Viví allí dos años can bound a situation even though two years is not brief.

Do not reduce the contrast to short versus long. El concierto duró tres horas is long but completed. A later lesson will show how Spanish can describe background without presenting its endpoint. For now, ask whether the speaker packages the action as a whole inside a finished frame.

Examples

  1. Ayer llamé a mi abuela y hablamos veinte minutos.

Yesterday I called my grandmother, and we spoke for twenty minutes.

Ayer and the stated duration bound both completed actions.

  2. El sábado compramos comida y preparamos una cena especial.

On Saturday we bought food and prepared a special dinner.

Two linked events form one finished Saturday sequence.

  3. Vivió en Lima de 2018 a 2022.

She lived in Lima from 2018 to 2022.

The dates supply a closed boundary despite the long duration.

  4. Normalmente ceno en casa, pero anoche cené fuera.

I normally eat at home, but last night I ate out.

The present habit contrasts with one completed exception.

Common mistake

Instead of
Ayer trabajo hasta las seis y después camino a casa.
Try
Ayer trabajé hasta las seis y después caminé a casa.

Ayer places both actions in a finished past frame, so present forms trabajo and camino conflict with the intended meaning. The preterite forms trabajé and caminé present the work and journey as completed steps. Historical present uses exist, but they are not this neutral account.

Practice

Try it yourself

Choose present or preterite and write the complete contrast: normalmente / estudiar por la mañana; ayer / estudiar por la tarde; every Friday / cocinar; last Friday / comer fuera.
