Regular AR Verbs in the Preterite

Ayer hablé and trabajamos anchor the regular AR preterite. Build each person from one ending set, paying special attention to written accents that mark completed actions.

Learning objective

Conjugate regular AR verbs in the preterite and preserve their required accent marks.

Regular AR verbs use one preterite ending set for completed past actions: é, aste, ó, amos, asteis, and aron. Hablar becomes hablé, hablaste, habló, hablamos, hablasteis, and hablaron. Llegué, the yo form of llegar, has a spelling adjustment: g changes to gu before é to preserve the hard g sound.

The first-person plural form hablamos looks identical in the present and preterite. Context resolves it: Hablamos cada día is present because cada día marks a habit, while Ayer hablamos después de clase is past because ayer closes the frame. Do not invent an accent where the standard form has none.

English-speaking learners may treat the subject as sufficient and leave the infinitive unchanged. Spanish needs Trabajé el lunes, not Yo trabajar el lunes. Conversely, once trabajé identifies the speaker, yo is optional unless it contrasts my action with another person’s.

Create a compact completed account: Ayer llegué temprano, preparé la sala y saludé a los participantes. Después, todos practicamos y al final celebramos. The shared AR pattern supports a whole event, while sequence words and the time marker prevent the forms from becoming a disconnected table.

Examples

  1. Caminé al mercado y compré fruta.

I walked to the market and bought fruit.

Both first-person forms carry the written accent on é.

  2. ¿Trabajaste ayer o descansaste en casa?

Did you work yesterday, or did you rest at home?

Spanish uses conjugated preterites without an equivalent of English did.

  3. La película terminó tarde, pero llegamos a casa rápido.

The film finished late, but we got home quickly.

Terminó has accented ó; llegamos is identified as past by the finished context.

  4. Ustedes reservaron una mesa y cenaron juntos.

You all booked a table and had dinner together.

The third-person plural ending aron matches ustedes.

Common mistake

Instead of
Ayer yo trabaje y mi compañera preparo todo.
Try
Ayer yo trabajé y mi compañera preparó todo.

Without the written accents, trabaje and prepare-related spellings can be read as other verb forms rather than these preterites. Trabajé marks yo, and preparó marks the third-person subject. Accent marks are meaningful spelling, not optional decoration.

Practice

Try it yourself

Complete the finished class report with llegar, organizar, practicar, and terminar: Yo ___ a las nueve, Marta ___ los materiales, nosotros ___ dos horas y la clase ___ a las once.
