Tener, Estar and Hacer in the Preterite
Tuve, estuve, and hice introduce irregular stems that appear throughout past storytelling. Associate each form with a complete experience, location, task, or event.
Learning objective
Use the preterite of tener, estar, and hacer to narrate completed situations.
An irregular stem is the main verb part that differs from the regular pattern. Tener, estar, and hacer use tuv, estuv, and hic in the preterite. Add e, iste, o, imos, isteis, or ieron without written accents. Hacer changes c to z in hizo so that the expected sound is preserved.
Use tener for a bounded experience or possession: Tuve una reunión means I had a meeting. Estar can locate someone or describe a state during a completed frame: Estuvimos en casa toda la tarde. Hacer reports a finished task or event: Hice la compra and Hizo frío.
English had and was do not map to only one Spanish choice. Tuve frío often means I felt cold, while Hizo frío means the weather was cold. Estuve cansado presents the speaker’s state. Identify who or what the sentence describes before selecting the familiar English translation.
Combine the three verbs in one difficult day: Ayer tuve mucho trabajo, estuve en la oficina hasta tarde e hice dos informes. Mis compañeros tuvieron una reunión y después hicieron la cena. This connected account shows how each form works with its own subject and meaning, while the story remains clear from beginning to end.
Examples
Tuve un problema, pero hice una llamada y encontré ayuda.
I had a problem, but I made a call and found help.
Tuve introduces the experience; hice names the response.
Estuvimos en Bogotá tres días y tuvimos buen tiempo.
We were in Bogotá for three days and had good weather.
The duration bounds the location and experience.
Ella hizo la reserva mientras nosotros estuvimos en el tren.
She made the booking while we were on the train.
Hizo matches ella; estuvimos matches nosotros.
Anoche hizo frío y tuve que cerrar las ventanas.
Last night it was cold, and I had to close the windows.
Hizo frío describes weather; tuve que introduces a completed obligation.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Ayer tení una cita, estuvé allí temprano y hací preguntas.
- Try
- Ayer tuve una cita, estuve allí temprano e hice preguntas.
These verbs use the irregular preterite forms tuve, estuve, and hice rather than accented versions built from their infinitives. The conjunction y changes to e before a following /i/ sound, so y hice becomes e hice in standard spelling.
