Advance a Narrative with Preterite Actions

A chain of completed events supplies a story's spine. Conjugate precise preterite verbs and arrange them so each bounded action changes the situation for what follows.

Learning objective

Narrate a coherent sequence of bounded events using accurate preterite forms.

A bounded event is one presented with a beginning and endpoint as a complete narrative unit. A sequence of preterite verbs advances a story because each completed action changes the situation in which the next action occurs.

No basta con acumular verbos. Ordena los hechos mediante relaciones claras: Marta abrió el correo, leyó la fecha y llamó al cliente. La lectura aporta información nueva; por eso, la llamada resulta comprensible como consecuencia del paso anterior.

Precise verbs make the narrative spine stronger than repeated forms of hacer. Connect successive events with entonces, después, al cabo de unos minutos, or a meaningful cause, but leave out a connector when chronology and sentence order already make the relationship clear.

Una cadena en pretérito puede contener acciones largas: El equipo trabajó durante seis meses, presentó el prototipo y consiguió financiación. Los seis meses se presentan como un periodo completo. La duración, por sí sola, no convierte trabajó en imperfecto.

Examples

  1. Cerré la puerta, bajé las escaleras y pedí un taxi.

I closed the door, went downstairs, and ordered a taxi.

Each completed action places the speaker in a new situation.

  2. Lucía encontró la llave; entonces abrió el archivador y copió el informe.

Lucía found the key; then she opened the filing cabinet and copied the report.

The connector makes the dependency between the first two events explicit.

  3. El vuelo aterrizó, pero nadie abrió las puertas durante veinte minutos.

The flight landed, but nobody opened the doors for twenty minutes.

Both bounded events can include very different durations.

  4. Probamos dos rutas, elegimos la más segura y llegamos antes del anochecer.

We tried two routes, chose the safest one, and arrived before nightfall.

The sequence shows a decision producing an outcome.

Common mistake

Instead of
Ayer fui al mercado, compraba fruta y volví a casa.
Try
Ayer fui al mercado, compré fruta y volví a casa.

The middle verb belongs to the same chain of completed errands, so compré maintains the bounded sequence. Compraba would invite a background or unfolding interpretation and would normally need a development that occurs during the shopping.

Practice

Try it yourself

Turn this five-point timeline into a connected narrative: receive an urgent message, miss the first bus, call a colleague, share a taxi, reach the meeting. Show how each event changes what can happen next and use at most three sequence connectors.
