Describe an Ongoing Past Action That Was Interrupted

An interruption pattern combines an activity viewed from within with the event that cuts into it. Contrast estaba hablando or hablaba with a punctual preterite development.

Learning objective

Combine imperfect background activity with a preterite interruption in one narrative frame.

An interruption contrast combines an ongoing action viewed from inside with a bounded event that enters it. The imperfect supplies that unfolding activity; the preterite marks the interruption or development that changes the active scene.

Mientras strongly favours the simultaneous frame, whereas cuando can introduce either relation. Cuando entré, Ana hablaba shows speech already under way; Cuando entré, Ana habló can present two successive events, with Ana speaking after the entrance.

Examples

  1. Estábamos cenando cuando se fue la luz.

We were having dinner when the power went out.

The progressive highlights an activity already in progress when the outage occurs.

While Clara was driving, she received a call from the hospital.

Mientras holds the driving open as the call enters the scene.

I was editing the report when the computer restarted.

The simple imperfect is natural for an unfolding task; the preterite supplies the disruptive event.

When I arrived, they were arguing; when they saw me, they fell silent.

The connected example moves from an existing activity to a later bounded reaction.

Common mistake

Instead of
Mientras escribí el correo, llegó la respuesta.
Try
Mientras escribía el correo, llegó la respuesta.

The intended meaning places the reply inside an activity already unfolding, so escribía supplies the open frame. Escribí would package writing as complete and would require a different relationship, such as Después de que escribí el correo, llegó la respuesta.

Practice

Try it yourself

Record a four-sentence voice-note story. Establish two simultaneous activities, interrupt them with an unexpected sound, describe one immediate reaction, and finish by saying whether the original activity continued. Use both simple imperfect and estar plus gerund.
