Mark Beginnings and Endings in the Preterite
Verbs such as empezar, terminar, and dejar de highlight boundaries. Use their preterite forms to locate the moment an activity began, ended, or ceased within a narrative.
Learning objective
Mark narrative boundaries with preterite forms of beginning, ending, and stopping verbs.
A narrative boundary is the point at which an activity begins, ends, or stops. Preterite forms of empezar, comenzar, terminar, acabar, and dejar de locate that transition and therefore move the timeline forward.
Empezó a llover enfoca el inicio de la lluvia, mientras que llovía nos sitúa dentro de ella. Terminó de escribir marca la finalización de una tarea; dejó de escribir señala que la actividad cesó, pero no necesariamente que el texto quedara completo.
The complement matters. Empezar and comenzar normally take a plus an infinitive; terminar and acabar can take de plus an infinitive; dejar de means to stop doing something. Learning each boundary verb with its preposition prevents an accurate tense from entering an inaccurate structure.
Para marcar la finalización sin ambigüedad, usa terminó de leer o acabó la lectura. Acabar de seguido de un infinitivo suele señalar pasado reciente: acaba de leer significa que ha leído hace muy poco, y acababa de leer sitúa ese pasado reciente desde otro momento pasado.
Examples
La reunión empezó a las nueve y terminó antes del mediodía.
The meeting started at nine and finished before midday.
Two preterites establish both boundaries of the same event.
Dejó de nevar, así que reabrieron la carretera.
It stopped snowing, so they reopened the road.
The end of the weather event enables the following action.
Comenzaron a negociar en abril, pero no firmaron hasta junio.
They began negotiating in April, but they did not sign until June.
The beginning and later outcome occupy distinct points on the timeline.
Terminé de preparar el presupuesto y se lo envié a la directora.
I finished preparing the budget and sent it to the director.
Completion of the first task makes the second action possible; directora is naturally translated by role, not by copying gender marking into English.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- El concierto empezó tocar y dejó tocar a medianoche.
- Try
- El grupo empezó a tocar y dejó de tocar a medianoche.
The corrected sentence supplies the performers and preserves both required prepositions: empezar a and dejar de. Without de, dejar tocar means to allow someone to play, which changes the intended boundary meaning completely.
Practice
Try it yourself
Build a five-event project timeline using a beginning, an interruption, a restart, a completed task, and a final stop. Choose among empezar a, dejar de, volver a, terminar de, and acabar, then explain the consequence of each boundary.
