Anticipate Events with Antes de Que

Antes de que relates one action to another action not yet realized from that viewpoint. Contrast it with antes de plus infinitive when both clauses share a subject.

Learning objective

Sequence anticipated actions with antes de que or a same-subject infinitive construction.

Antes de orders one action before another. With the same subject, use antes de plus an infinitive: Revisé el billete antes de salir. The speaker both checked and left, so no finite second clause is needed.

The subjunctive reflects the event's status from the relevant viewpoint, not whether it eventually became real.

I turn off the computer before leaving the office.

One subject performs both actions, so salir remains infinitive.

I turn off the computer before the last colleague leaves.

A different subject requires present subjunctive salga.

We bought water before the walk started.

The anticipated event is later than the completed purchase in a past sequence.

Before making a decision, speak to me before we send the reply.

One sentence assigns the first action to the listener and the later action to us.

Common mistake

Instead of
Salimos antes de que empezó la lluvia.
Try
Salimos antes de que empezara la lluvia.

At the moment of leaving, the rain was still anticipated, so the changed-subject antes de que clause uses imperfect subjunctive empezara. The later fact that rain began does not convert that earlier perspective into an assertion.

Practice

Try it yourself

Build a six-step travel checklist with a clear sequence. Use three same-person antes de plus infinitive instructions and three changed-subject antes de que clauses involving a driver, a hotel, and a travel companion. Explain who performs every action.
