Refer to a Whole Idea with Lo Que
Lo que refers to an unstated thing or an entire situation rather than agreeing with a named noun. Use it to comment on what happened, matters, or surprised you.
Learning objective
Use lo que to refer back to situations, propositions, and unspecified content.
Lo que is a neutral relative expression that can refer to an unspecified thing or to an entire situation. Unlike el que or la que with a named noun, it carries no gender agreement and often means what or the thing that.
En Cancelaron la reunión, lo que nos sorprendió, lo que recupera el hecho completo de la cancelación. No sustituye a una reunión concreta: si quieres identificar el sustantivo, dices la reunión que cancelaron o la que cancelaron.
The expression can also introduce unknown content: No entiendo lo que necesitas. Here it does not point back to a named noun; it means the content or thing that you need. Context decides whether the reference is forward-looking or retrospective.
Distingue lo que de que solo. Me preocupa que cancelen introduce una cláusula que causa preocupación. Cancelaron, lo que me preocupa comments on an asserted event. La puntuación y la estructura muestran dos perspectivas informativas distintas.
Lo cual can also comment on a whole proposition, often with a more written tone: Cambió la fecha, lo cual complicó el viaje. This lesson centres lo que because it is frequent across conversation and writing, not because alternatives are invalid.
Al revisar, subraya el contenido recuperado. Si es un sustantivo con género, quizá necesites el que, la que o que. Si es una situación completa o algo todavía sin nombrar, lo que suele ofrecer la referencia adecuada.
Examples
Perdimos el último tren, lo que cambió todos nuestros planes.
We missed the last train, which changed all our plans.
Lo que retrieves the whole missed-train situation, not merely tren.
No recuerdo lo que dijo la directora.
I don't remember what the director said.
Lo que introduces unspecified content rather than agreeing with a named noun.
Lo que más me preocupa es la falta de tiempo.
What worries me most is the lack of time.
The neutral expression packages an unspecified concern that the predicate then identifies.
El informe que llegó ayer explica lo que ocurrió.
The report that arrived yesterday explains what happened.
Que modifies informe; lo que refers to the unspecified event explained inside it.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Cancelaron la reunión, la que nos sorprendió mucho.
- Try
- Cancelaron la reunión, lo que nos sorprendió mucho.
The surprise concerns the whole cancellation event, so neutral lo que is appropriate. La que would retrieve a feminine noun and create a different relative structure.
Practice
Try it yourself
Turn a three-event travel update into a connected reaction. State that the airline cancelled the flight, refer to that whole event with lo que, then use a second lo que for the unspecified solution you need.
