Enter, Hold, and Yield a Conversational Turn
Sustained conversation depends on signals for entering, continuing, and yielding. Use brief markers, eye contact where appropriate, and unfinished intonation while respecting different group rhythms.
Learning objective
Manage conversational turns with verbal and prosodic signals adapted to the interaction.
Turn-taking is the coordination of who speaks, continues, and stops in an interaction. Entry markers request the floor, holding signals show that an idea is unfinished, and yielding signals invite another person. Timing and delivery matter as much as the words.
Para entrar, una fórmula breve como perdona, sobre eso... reconoce el turno actual. Para sostenerlo, expresiones como déjame terminar esta idea y una entonación no final anuncian continuidad. Para cederlo, una pregunta directa o adelante abre espacio real.
A polite exchange is observable rather than culturally automatic. In one group, brief supportive overlap may be welcomed; in another, participants wait for a longer pause. Online delay, camera use, hierarchy, and individual style can alter the same people's timing.
Las señales deben corresponder a la conducta. Decir adelante y seguir hablando no cede el turno. Levantar la voz para sostenerlo puede convertirse en competencia. Una frase clara, una pausa y atención a la respuesta suelen ofrecer una transición más legible.
Repair accidental interruption quickly: Perdona, termina tú. If you need to re-enter, retain the thread with quería añadir algo sobre el plazo. This preserves both the relationship and the substantive link instead of abandoning the point or competing for volume.
Observa a las personas presentes: quién entra, cómo responde la otra persona y qué silencio cuenta como cierre. Adapta la duración de tus intervenciones y confirma la cesión mirando, nombrando o preguntando a quien recibirá el turno.
Examples
Perdona, ¿puedo añadir algo sobre el presupuesto?
Sorry, may I add something about the budget?
The entry names a relevant connection rather than seizing the floor.
Un momento, termino esta idea y te escucho.
One moment, I'll finish this idea and then listen to you.
The speaker holds briefly and promises a visible yield.
Eso es todo por mi parte. Ana, ¿qué opinas?
That's all from me. Ana, what do you think?
The completed intonation, name, and question yield clearly.
Perdona, termina tú; retomo después.
Sorry, you finish; I'll come back to my point afterwards.
This repairs an accidental interruption.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Say adelante while continuing the same explanation for another minute.
- Try
- Say adelante, stop, and attend to the person who now has the turn.
A verbal yield must match silence and attention. Otherwise the words invite participation while the behaviour prevents it.
Practice
Try it yourself
Write four labelled moves in a project exchange: Ana enters, Luis briefly holds the floor, Luis visibly yields it, and Ana resumes. Give every move an appropriate verbal or prosodic cue without making cultural generalisations.
