Express Duration and Experience with Llevar
Llevar plus a time span and gerund measures an activity continuing to the reference point. Contrast llevo dos años estudiando with estudié dos años, which presents a bounded period.
Learning objective
Describe ongoing duration with llevar while distinguishing it from completed time spans.
Llevar plus a duration and gerund measures an activity continuing up to a reference point: llevo dos años estudiando presents the study as ongoing now. Change the tense of llevar to move that reference point into past or future.
A completed span uses a different viewpoint. Estudié dos años packages the study as a bounded past period and does not itself say it continues. Llevo dos años estudiando explicitly reaches the present reference point and remains open.
The five-year activity extended to that past change; later context must tell us whether it continued beyond it.
No sumes automáticamente toda experiencia vital con llevar. He trabajado en tres países cuenta experiencias completadas, mientras llevo diez años trabajando en educación mide continuidad. Decide si quieres destacar acumulación, duración abierta o periodo cerrado.

Common mistake
- Instead of
- Llevo dos años estudié español y sigo ahora.
- Try
- Llevo dos años estudiando español y sigo estudiándolo.
The duration construction requires llevar plus gerund, not a conjugated preterite. Sigo estudiándolo makes the continuing interpretation explicit and supports the open present reference point.
