Use Aunque for Known and Uncertain Information

Aunque can introduce an accepted fact with the indicative or a hypothetical, disputed, or currently irrelevant condition with the subjunctive. Interpret the speaker's stance before choosing.

Learning objective

Select mood after aunque according to whether information is asserted or entertained.

Aunque introduces information that does not prevent the main outcome. With indicative, the speaker normally accepts or asserts that information; with subjunctive, the speaker may entertain it as hypothetical, disputed, unknown, or irrelevant to the decision.

Mood does not measure how surprising the result is. Aunque llueve, salimos can report the actual rain and actual departure. Aunque llueva, saldremos leaves the weather open while asserting that either possible condition will not change the plan.

In past narratives, the same stance distinction remains available. Aunque sabía la respuesta, guardó silencio asserts her knowledge. Aunque supiera la respuesta, no pensaba hablar treats that knowledge as unconfirmed or beside the point, rather than proving she did not know.

Evita traducir ambos modos con etiquetas rígidas como although frente a even if.

Although the flat is small, it has plenty of light and we're going to rent it.

Es asserts the observed size; that accepted drawback does not change the decision.

Even if the flat is small, we'll inspect it before deciding.

Sea leaves the reported size unconfirmed and makes it irrelevant to viewing the property.

Although he lost the receipt, the shop accepted the return.

Both preterites report completed facts within one concessive relationship.

Even if she had lost the receipt, the warranty was still registered.

The pluperfect subjunctive entertains a past possibility without asserting that the loss happened.

Common mistake

Instead of

The original speaker explicitly claims knowledge, so indicative es matches that asserted status. Subjunctive sea could be natural if truth were disputed or immaterial, but it conflicts with the added claim sé que es verdad in this intended reading.

Practice

Try it yourself

Respond to a weekend proposal with four connected sentences: concede one confirmed obstacle, mention one uncertain obstacle that will not change your plan, report one completed concession from last weekend, and finish with a decision. Label each obstacle as asserted or entertained.
