Express Past Habits Through Context

Repeated past behaviour usually emerges from context, frequency phrases, and the imperfect together. Avoid treating siempre as an automatic tense selector when a bounded period changes the viewpoint.

Learning objective

Describe past habits while recognising when a bounded period can favour the preterite.

A past habit is a repeated pattern seen as part of an open past situation. The imperfect commonly presents that perspective, while frequency phrases and a clear time setting help listeners understand that one form represents multiple occasions.

Expresiones como de niño, cada viernes, normalmente y a menudo construyen el contexto habitual. Sin embargo, la presencia de siempre no selecciona automáticamente el imperfecto: Siempre llevé casco durante aquella temporada presenta una práctica cumplida dentro de un periodo completo.

An infinitive is the unchanged dictionary form of a verb. Solía plus an infinitive makes repetition explicit when context might be ambiguous, but it is not required in every habitual sentence. Avoid repeating solía and a frequency marker unless both add a real contrast.

También puedes contraponer una costumbre y una excepción: Normalmente íbamos andando, pero aquel lunes tomamos el autobús. El imperfecto mantiene la rutina como marco; el pretérito destaca una ocasión delimitada que no siguió el patrón.

Examples

  1. De adolescente, entrenaba tres tardes por semana.

As a teenager, I used to train three afternoons a week.

The life stage and frequency establish a repeated open pattern.

  2. Solíamos cenar fuera, pero en julio cocinamos en casa todos los días.

We used to eat out, but in July we cooked at home every day.

A general habit contrasts with a completed month viewed as a whole.

  3. Cada vez que llamaba mi abuela, yo anotaba sus recetas.

Whenever my grandmother called, I wrote down her recipes.

Two imperfect forms describe linked repeated events rather than one interruption.

  4. Durante tres años fui al trabajo en bicicleta.

For three years I cycled to work.

The preterite packages the repeated practice inside a completed three-year interval.

Common mistake

Instead of
Siempre means that the following past verb must be imperfect.
Try
Siempre supports repetition, but the narrator still chooses an open or bounded viewpoint.

Siempre estudiaba allí presents an ongoing past routine. Siempre estudié allí durante el curso evaluates the whole completed course. The time phrase does not control the form by itself; the intended perspective and discourse context work together.

Practice

Try it yourself

Write a six-sentence comparison between a childhood routine and one completed summer. Include two imperfect habits, one solía construction, two preterite practices bounded by that summer, and one exceptional day that broke a routine.
