Express a Change of State with the Preterite
True changes of state need inchoative constructions, not simply a bounded state. Compare se preocupó for the onset of concern, se puso nervioso for entering a condition, and se quedó preocupado for the resulting state.
Learning objective
Distinguish the onset, entry, and resulting-state profiles expressed by common change-of-state constructions.
A change-of-state construction presents entry into a new condition rather than merely placing a state inside a completed period. Se preocupó can mark the onset of concern, se puso nervioso entry into nervousness, and se quedó preocupado the resulting state.
Ponerse suele introducir estados físicos o emocionales relativamente inmediatos: se puso pálida, se pusieron contentos. Quedarse enfoca cómo quedó alguien después de un hecho: se quedó callado, nos quedamos sorprendidos. Los adjetivos concuerdan con la persona descrita.
A pronominal verb is learned with an unstressed pronoun such as se. Preocuparse is pronominal and organises participants differently from preocupar: la noticia preocupó a Luis, but Luis se preocupó. Here se does not mean that Luis deliberately worried himself.
No todo estado en pretérito expresa un cambio. Estuvo nerviosa durante la entrevista delimita la condición, pero no identifica su comienzo. Se puso nerviosa al entrar sí selecciona la transición. El contexto debe distinguir duración, inicio y resultado.
Examples
Al leer el mensaje, Julia se preocupó.
When Julia read the message, she became concerned.
The pronominal preterite locates the onset of concern.
El público se puso nervioso cuando el actor no apareció.
The audience became nervous when the actor failed to appear.
Ponerse presents entry into an emotional condition; público is grammatically singular.
Después de la llamada, nos quedamos más tranquilos.
After the call, we felt calmer.
Quedarse highlights the resulting state; felt is more natural here than stayed.
La noticia sorprendió a Ana, y Ana se quedó en silencio.
The news surprised Ana, and she fell silent.
The first verb causes a reaction; the second describes the resulting condition without repeating Ana in natural English.
Common mistake
- Instead of
- Cuando oyó el ruido, fue nervioso.
- Try
- Cuando oyó el ruido, se puso nervioso.
Fue nervioso sounds like an unsuitable use of ser and does not present entry into the condition. Se puso nervioso supplies the change-of-state construction. A speaker referring to a woman would use nerviosa; plural referents require plural agreement.

Write a four-stage emotional arc after a traveller loses and recovers a passport. Use se preocupó for onset, se puso plus an adjective for entry, se quedó plus an adjective for a result, and estuvo plus an adjective for one bounded state. Explain each viewpoint.
